An iron hand bell of probable Early Medieval date, AD 700 - 1100. It has a rounded rectangular opening at the base, and tapers to the top so the two main faces are rectangular and the sides are triangular. It was made by folding a sheet of iron, so there is a seam down the centre of each side. There are two broken projections from the top, which were probably part of a ring handle; one can be seen extending into the inside of the bell too. The clapper is missing. The surface is rusted and has lumps of corrosion. There is no visible copper surface, so it is not possible to say if the b…

Fragment of an Early Medieval copper brazed iron bell. The fragment comprises part of the crown and shoulder of the bell, and also of the handle. The bell appears to be made of iron sheet brazed with copper. The bell is irregularly broken around the body. The crown is sub-rectangular in plan and flares to the breaks on all sides. The handle loop is semi-circular and is covered with light-brown concretion. This concretion also covers one side of the bell, and the interior too. The concretion changes to a dull purple-brown colour towards the break, where it also comprises flecks of char…

Fragment of an Early Medieval copper brazed iron bell. The fragment comprises part of the crown and shoulder of the bell, and also part of the handle. The crown appears to have been oval in plan. An iron shank passes theough the crown near the shoulder and rises above to the break. The shoulder flares outwards. The item is corroded, but a small patch of copper alloy is visible which suggests that this bells was copper brazed. Indeed, although XRF analysis has not been undertaken on this example, the metal detectorist noted that the object gives a strong non-ferrous reading on his meta…

An iron clapper from a bell. The shank is hexagonal in section and terminates with a swollen terminal also of hexagonal section. The suspension loop at the top is formed by a simple loop with the terminal partially coiled back around the shank. The clapper measures 140mm in length. The width of the shank is circa 11mm. The 'ball' measures circa 21mm in diameter. This clapper, which is likely to have come from a large hand-bell, was found in association with several other bell fragments of probable middle Saxon date, for example LIN-E97BD1, LIN-E86CFC, LIN-D8FC8C, and LIN-4B37F8.

Five fragments of an iron hand-bell, or perhaps several iron hand-bells. All pieces appear to be brazed with copper-alloy ((Bourke 1980; 1983). The two fragments represent both shoulders of the crown. The first is rectangular in plan, gently sloped, and with rounded sides. The face of the bell gently flares outwards. A large lump of iron corrosion is visible beneath the shoulder, and this extends 12mm above it vertically. This probably represents one end of the handle. The width of the crown is 17mm and the length is 25mm. Copper plating is visible on the exterior of the shoulder a…

A fragment of an iron hand-bell (Bourke 1980; 1983). Only part of the crown and a fragment of the face survive. The surviving part is from the top of the bell, comprising the corner of the crown and extending approximately half to two-thirds along the crown. The crown is quadrangular in plan with gently rounded shoulders. a mass of iron corrosion is visible on the underside at the corner, and projecting from this mass is a small shank of circular section, representing the remains of the suspension loop for the clapper. The bell is highly corroded and much of the surface has laminated.…

A probable fragment of an iron hand-bell plated with copper-alloy using the 'fusion-plating process' (Bourke 1980; 1983). Only part of the crown and a fragment of one corner survive. The surviving part of the crown appears to be from the corner. It is flat, and appears to have been quadrangular in plan. The surviving face gently flares outwards to the break below. The surface is heavily corroded, and a thick layer of iron is visible on the top and the underside of the crown, perhaps indicating where the handle loop was fitted. Patches of copper alloy plating are visible on the exterio…

A fragment of an iron hand-bell plated with copper-alloy using the 'fusion-plating process' (Bourke 1980; 1983). Only part of two faces and the mouth survive. The wider face flares to the mouth; the perimeter of the mouth is angled slightly outwards. The face is covered by extensive patches of iron corrosion, but patches of copper-alloy plating are visible on both the interior and exterior. The original dimension of the bell is unclear. A fragment of an iron hand-bell plated with copper-alloy using the 'fusion-plating process' (Bourke 1980; 1983). Only part of one corner survives, with three faces represented below. The crown is flat and appears to have been quadrangular in form. An iron shank - probably the remains of the handle - is visible above and below the crown in the corner. The face flares to the break below; the corner is rounded. The wider face has a mass of iron corrosion that forms a criss-cross pattern, which may indicate textile. This is potentially important, as Tim Young has established the use of te…

Two fragments from the same Early Medieval hand-bell, dating to the period c.AD 600-900. The largest fragment comprises the top of the bell. It is rectangular in plan, flat, and measures 43 x 38mm. The perimeter of the bell curves downwards on all sides to form the body of the bell, which if retaining its present shape would mean that it was sub-rectangular in section. Part of the bell wall survives as a separate fragment, which measures 39 x 23 x 6mm. The bell is made of iron, but an extensive coating of copper-alloy is visible on both the interior and the exterior. This suggests …
