Copper alloy mount. Long cast mount of zoomorphic form, comprising a dragonesque head with eyes deftly represented by short cuts, and a crest or ears held back, projecting from a vertical neck. The neck rises at right angles from a narrow body of plano-convex section with clawed legs alongside it and folded wings, the latter in two pairs like an insect's. The narrow body is expanded as a knotted tail at its other end. Two rivets, of length 6mm and shank diameter 1.6mm, pass at an angle, backwards relative to the creature, through its body at positions between the front claws and at th…

There is a deliberate and original bend in the neck of almost ninety degrees, as if the head was tipped back to look upwards. The body is pentagonal in section and thickens towards the end where it is broken. The break falls across a large hole running through the body from top to bottom. The bottom of the body at this pint is recessed as if the mount fitted onto a rectangular bar or similar. There is a double row of p…

A copper alloy, zoomorphic mount in the shape of an elongated, slender winged beast, possibly a mount from a small vessel or a box. The tail of the beast (probably a dragon) has a small, circular mounting point at the terminal, containing the remains of a ferrous rivet. Above this is a short, raised, transverse ridge. The mount then widens out to form the body of the animal which is somewhat thicker than the rest of the mount and has a raised ridge to represent folded wings. This part of the mount also has two circular piercings for rivets; one hole contains iron corrosion, the other …

Copper-alloy object, perhaps a mount from a box or casket. The mount is in the shape of a dragon, with a bird standing on the beast’s back; the bird is facing the opposite way to the beast. The bird is decorated with markings on the back to indicate feathers and is not cast integrally but is actually a separate piece of copper alloy which is slotted through the back of the beast with an integral rivet. The object terminates in the zoomorphic head of the dragon, which has a circular hole running transversely through the mouth; the mouth is now broken at the hole. At the other end …

Copper-alloy object, perhaps a mount from a box. The mount is long and thin and terminates with an open-mouthed animal with an upturned snout, probably representing a dragon. When viewed from above, the head of the beast is triangular, tapering towards the snout. The only facial feature represented is the dragon's ears, depicted by two small moulded humps. The beast's neck appears to be undecorated, but the body is covered with moulded diagonal grooves descending to the tail area, probably representing the beasts' folded wings. From the photographs the neck appears to be circular or …

An unusual cast copper-alloy object, an image of which has been examined by James Robinson of the British Museum who believes that it is 12th century in date and, although related to casket mounts, is clearly not one. We therefore remain unsure about its exact function.
The object consists of a central oval body with a neck projecting from one end of this, terminating in a dragon-like head. At the other end a tail projects at a 45-degree angle from the body, unlike the neck which is a straight extension of it. The object measures c. 110mm in total length and c. 20mm in width; at it…
