Object type: KEY (WINDING)
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A fragment of a probable cast copper alloy clock key of post-medieval date. About two-thirds of the bow survive; the remainder of the bow, the stem and bit are missing. The flat bow comprises two unequal loops with cast decoration in the form of a border around the edge of the larger roundel and a number of wedge shapes. A similar but complete example features in 'Medieval and Post-Medieval Finds from Exeter' (1984, pp. 344-5, fig. 193, no. 190). This example was discovered in a late 17th century context.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast copper alloy strap end of early-medieval date. The Thomas Class B strap-end measures 43.2mm by 9.3mm (a width to length ratio of 1:4.5) by 4mm and weighs 4.6g. It has a split proximal end, a gently tapering shaft and a zoomorphic terminal. The split end is flatter and wider, and contains the remains of two attachment holes. The strap-end is very worn and the decoration cannot be easily discerned. However, it is possibly a Thomas Type 4 (multi-headed) and may have originally been decorated with further animal heads.

Four sherds of Romano-British Samian Ware dating from the 1st to mid-3rd centuries AD. Two of the sherds are well fired with a well formed orange-brown glossy slip and orange fabric, possibly from the South Gaul region of La Graufesenque. The rim sherd derives from a hemi-spherical bowl with beaded rim and plain undecorated upper section (Webster, 1996, 47, type 37). It measures 43.55 x 38.03 x 6.32mm thick (12.19g). The body sherd is plain and measures 27.47 x 25.51 x 6.00mm thick (5.86g). The other two sherds are of a much softer fabric (fired at a lower temperature) and lighter ora…

Two lead pot mends, probably dating from the Roman period. They have the typical shape of two lead discs joined by an integral column of lead formed by pouring molten lead into a hole in the vessel to plug it. No vestige of the original vessel remains although the pot mends were found in association with a large assemblage of Roman pottery and they may be of Roman date. One (probably external) disc is typically larger than the other. They measure 22.44mm diameter (external disc), 12.02mm diameter (internal disc) and 12.32mm thick overall (20.81g); and 21.99mm, 15.88mm and 7.41mm thick …

Three rim sherds of Roman Samian Ware datable from the late 1st to mid-3rd centuries AD. Two of the sherds may be from the same vessel but are not conjoining. They both have trailed leaf decoration on the upper surface of their overhanging rims, although this has mostly been removed by abrasion to leave the 'ghost' of the pattern as patches without slip. They probably derive from a form 35 or 36 cup or dish datable to the 1st or 2nd century AD (Webster, 1996, 46). They have dull orange-brown slip and brown fabric containing frequent white flecks and probably derive from the central Gau…
