Three rim shards from Roman Central Gaulish Samian Ware vessels, probably dating from the mid 1st to mid-3rd century. All were found together and have very similar fabrics. Their smooth, fine fabric is light orange in colour with a ‘satin’ gloss orange-red slip on both the inner and outer surfaces. The fabric has abundant fine mica frequent fine limestone and fairly frequent larger red and brown iron ore inclusions. The shards are too small to determine the original diameters of their vessels. Main phase of production and export to Britain of this ware was between c. AD 120-199. …

Rim shard from a Roman greyware vessel. Everted rim, slightly thickened on the outside, with a groove running around the outside edge. Two indentations, which appear to be deliberately made on the inner surface, just below the rim. Probably from a large storage jar or similar vessel. The coarse fabric has a light bluish-grey inner and outer surface, with a buff core. It is tempered with sparse mica, frequent, poorly sorted fragments of white and clear quartz, sparse black and less frequent red/brown iron ore, numerous rounded voids. Fractures slightly laminar in places. Rim diameter…

Pewter Post-Medieval spoon. The bowl is oval. A very small portion of a strap form handle remains attached, but the rest is missing. There are no marks on the spoon to aid dating. However, given the form of the spoon it is likely to date from the second half of the seventeenth century onwards. The bowl is completely flattened and the metal is fairly pitted.

Cast copper-alloy sub-rectangular shoe buckle, c.1690-1720. The frame has bevelled inner edges, but is otherwise undecorated. It has two drilled holes through the centre of each of the longer sides to hold a seperate spindle. This spindle, along with the pin, stud chape and tongue remain in situ. The spindle appears to be iron, which has become badly corroded. The buckle frame is greenish-brown and survives in good condition. The pin, stud chape and tongue are slightly lighter green-brown in colour and show greater signs of errosion. Similar to Whitehead, p.102, no.660. Length: 44.3…

A flint thumbnail scraper, made from a retouched tertiary waste flake. The ventral face is very slightly convex and the bulb of purcussion appears to have been removed by a recent break. The dorsal face has three flaking scars, surrounded on three edges by semi-abrupt to abrupt retouch. The distal end has a slightly rolled edge resulting from later damage probably through ploughing or similar action. There is a large flake missing at the proximal end, which appears to have occured naturally following deposition. The flint is green-grey-whitish in colour, with a milky patina which has o…

A probable broken flint end scraper/piercer of Neolithic to early Bronze Age date. The surviving portion appears to be approximately just under half of the original scraper. At the proximal end on the ventral surface is part of the bulb of percussion and a bulbar scar. Faint ripples radiate down the ventral surface. The proximal end has been coarsely retouched. Object type: FINGER RING
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast gold posy ring of probable early 18th century date. The flat gold band is inscribed on the inside 'content hath noe want'. The script could be an 18th century hand. The maker’s mark (TH) written in black letter is most likely identified with one of two smallworkers, the first of which entered his mark in 1711 and the second in 1717 (Grimwade, nos. 2800, 2801). As the find probably dates to later than 1706 it falls outside the provisions of the Treasure Act 1996 (N. Awais-Dean, The British Museum, 16.04.07).
