Copper alloy fragment, possibly the socketed shaft from a miniature spear. The object is a rolled over sheet of copper alloy that widens towards a flattned terminal that appears to open into something. Both ends are incomplete. The find was made in an area that has produced numerous Iron Age and Roman miniature shields, swords and spears. The object may not be this date however, and equally may be a medieval lace chape.

The surface of the lace chape has traces of gilding. The find measures 29.38mm long, 3.92mm wide and weighs 0.92g. Egan and Pritchard (1991: 281) note that lace chapes between 25 and 40mm in length are attributable to contexts of 1330 or later.

Large Medieval possible lace chape with a butted seam, neatly pointed closed end, from which two small pieces have been excised before folding inwards, and the solder scars at both ends, indicating the former presence of binding rings. A rather more sophisticated object than examples from London (Dress Accessories, 280 fig. 188). cf. an example from Winchester, identified as a ferrule, with a binding ring near the closed end (Biddle 1990, 1093 no. 4096). Length 78mm. Maximum diameter 8mm. 13th - 14th century.

Length: 40.5mm, external diamater of the wide end: 7.8mm; external diameter of the narrow end: 4.7mm; thickness of sheet copper-alloy: 0.6mm at the wide end. The chape is of copper-alloy sheeting, bent into a tapering tube with open ends and a straight overlapping seam along the side. There is a narrow ridge around the outside of the narrow end. The wide end is incomplete; this damage does not appear to be recent. The chape has a brown patina with a more uneven p…

A copper alloy Medieval possible lace chape. This chape is larger than normal. The chape, like many found, has been flattened and also broken at both ends. It has an edge to edge seam and tapers slightly. It measures 39.2mm x 14.1mm x 3.2mm, weighing 1.3g. Egan and Pritchard (1991) mentions that these larger lace chapes have a possible gradual standardization in size, phasing out larger ones after the middle of the 14th century. This chape therefore dates between c.1270-c.1350. See 'Dress Accessories', p.288-90 for examples.

Incomplete Medieval or Post Medieval copper alloy sheet chape. The chape is oval in cross section, possibly squashed and formed of a single sheet of copper alloy, over lapping at one side. The attachment end is complete with the point lost to old breaks. There is a seperate circular sectioned copper alloy rivet running across inside the chape. Although it is large for a lace this rivet suggests it was attached to material, leather or wood, it would also be impractical on a dagger chape. There appears to be a known class of large chapes with rivets of this form whose use is currently u…
