A cast copper-alloy probable lace tag or possibly a sword chape, dating to between c. 15th-to mid-17th centuries. Unlike some other examples recorded onto the PAS database (cf.: BH-3E90E0), this example has not been simply created from a copper-alloy sheet and rolled; rather, this object has a solid cast globular terminal with collar, which seems to be attached through casting to the hollow and split seam-backed copper-alloy sheet that forms the majority of the tag or chape. The hollowed internal space is filled with soil and object has been crushed, but would have originally been con…

A copper alloy sheet curled into a tube, possibly a Medieval lace chape, dating to c. 1250-1450 AD. The tube tapers into a pressed point at one end, has a regular edge-to-edge seam and has been flattened at the top near its upper straight edge, probably after deposition. This example does not have the small rivet common to many Medieval lace chapes. It measures 46.9 mm long, 6.9 mm wide, 0.7 mm thick, and weighs 1.53 grams. For similar chapes cf. Egan and Pritchard 2002, Figs. 182-184, esp. No. 1406.

Complete Medieval copper alloy lace chape, 1300-1450 AD. The find consists of a triangular-plan chape formed from folded sheet copper alloy with an edge-to-edge seam. Corresponding circular rivet holes have been pierced in each side of the chape, slightly inset from the upper edge. At the lowest point the sheeting has been folded to create a closed end. The chape has a mid olive-green patina with some concretion. It measures 22.6mm long, 9.9mm wide and 4.3mm thick; it weighs 1.35 grams.

A cast copper alloy terminal either a lace chape or a teminal from a thin wooden rod such as a brush or pen. The chape is hollow and cast in one piece, and tapers slightly to a terminal knop of 6mm diameter which has been made seperately out of copper alloy sheet then attached. There are two rivet holes, one on either side of the object, close to the open end. The object is worn with a dark brownish-green patina. It is 28.5mm long, 9.5mm diameter at the end furthest from the knop terminal, and weighs 2.3g. It is late medieval to post medieval in date. Items similar in form to this one …

Rolled copper alloy sheet lace chape. The chape is a hollow cone made by rolling a triangular piece of sheet and overlapping the edges. Egan and Pritchard (1991) page 281-290 suggest lace chapes are in use from the mid 14th century and continue in use into the post medieval period. The chape is 46.4mm long, 7.6mm wide by 5.2mm thick at the top and weighs 3.4 grams.
