A copper alloy terminal-end ferrule of unknown use and uncertain date, possibly from the post medieval to modern period dating from around AD 1600 - 1950. It is a tapering hollow tubular body which contains wood. There is a soldered seam running along the tubular body with a circular rivet hole in each side of the metal. There is a jagged tear to the base of the seam. At the closed end is a solid pointed knop with a rounded collar. There is a band of white metal, perhaps solder, between the terminal and the hollow area.  The m…

Copper alloy modern terminal-end ferrule from an umbrella or parasol spoke. Tapering hollow conical body finishing in a sub-spherical knop. As is the case for this example vestiges of the wooden interior often survive. The wider open end has opposed circular holes that would have accommodated a transverse retaining pin. They are often mistaken for medieval and post medieval lace chapes or aiglets, hence its inclusion in this database.

Broad period: MEDIEVAL

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper-alloy object, possibly a very large chape of Medieval date. It is formed from a sheet of copper-alloy that has been rolled to create a cylindrical object that tapers to a sharp point. The open attachment end of the object has been partially folded over, possibly deliberately flattened. The exterior surface has a dark green patina and the entire object measures 91.23mm in length, 8.26mm in width, 5.60mm in thickness and 7.85g in weight. This is possibly a very large chape, perhaps a lace chape or similar, with parallels of similar size noted from London (Egan and Pritchard, 19…

Tube, possibly a needle case or lace chape, consisting of a rolled sheet with a longitudinal seam and four 'petals' crimped together at the terminal, with separate binding strips soldered onto the mid-point and at the terminal, and solder from the missing strip at mouth. Diameter of tube 7mm, length 99mm. Cf. Hinton in Biddle (1990), fig,352, nos.4087 and 4096.

Large Medieval possible lace chape with a butted seam, neatly pointed closed end, from which two small pieces have been excised before folding inwards, and the solder scars at both ends, indicating the former presence of binding rings. A rather more sophisticated object than examples from London (Dress Accessories, 280 fig. 188). cf. an example from Winchester, identified as a ferrule, with a binding ring near the closed end (Biddle 1990, 1093 no. 4096). Length 78mm. Maximum diameter 8mm. 13th - 14th century.
