Copper alloy possible lace end. Part of a sheet metal [thickness 0.6mm] conical object with a butted or parallel seam; the small size might permit an identification as a lace end. The finder kindly suggests an identification as a scabbard chape from the sheath of a narrow pointed blade. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1650 Length: 30.9mm, Width: 8.2mm, Thickness (overall as found): 5.8mm, Weight: 1.63gms

A copper-alloy chape, probably a lace tag, and probably dating from the Medieval period, about AD 1270-1400. The object is a hollow trapezoidal-section tube terminating in a folded tab at the closing end. This type of closure is noted in Egan and Pritchard (2002, p. 282). It is formed of sheet metal that has been folded forming an edge-to-edge seam and is untapered. The object has a length of 108.23 mm, a width of 10.81 mm, and a thickness of 5.38 mm. It weighs 11.95g. Possible lace chapes of over 40 mm in length (like this one) have been discussed by Egan and Pritchard (200…

A complete copper-alloy medieval lace chape. The chape is formed from a rolled copper-alloy sheet and is conical in shape with an overlapping seam. The chape is undecorated and distorted. Some of the overlapping seam has opened up due to the folding and distortion and there is a split in the copper alloy sheet at 17 mm from the point. The chape would have been 45 mm long and about 5 mm in diameter narrowing to a point prior to distortion. Length 30 mm; width 8mm; Thickness 0.5 mm; Weight 1.9g

Complete copper-alloy post-medieval or modern chape or lace tag (c. 1600 - 1800). The chape is ovoid in plan and tapers towards a turned knob at the base. The chape is formed from a rolled copper-alloy sheet with a straight soldered seam visible centrally on one face. The rim has circumferential decoration, consisting of parallel grooves 2mm apart containing evenly spaced circular dents, and above the top groove there are vertical grooves to the edge of the rim. There is a dent in the rim and a break causing a small aperture towards the top of the seam, but the chape is in otherwise g

A copper alloy lace tag or chape probably of Medieval date, AD 1200 - 1400. It is constructed from sheet copper alloy rolled into a narrow tube. The tag is very well made and no seam is visible. It is decorated with a series of alternating broad and narrow circumferential grooves separated by narrow ridges. Two of these ridges, at the mid point of the tag, are further decorated with small, angled notches, giving a ropework effect. The tag has suffered some damage at the open end and corrosion at the closed end; the method of fastening or type of closure cannot be determined. The tag h…

Copper alloy possible scabbard chape. A long tapering conical sheet metal object with a longitudinal butted seam. The narrow end bears a series of closely-spaced circumferential grooves. The finder kindly suggests an identification as a lace end of similar date. If from a scabbard, this would be for an implement with a narrow pointed blade; if a lace end it would be for an unusually thick and substantial cord. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1650. Length: 45.1mm, Diameter: 8.6mm, Thickness (sheet): 0.4mm, Weight (with some trapped soil): 2.45gms.

A medieval copper-alloy chape. It is formed by a single sheet of rolled copper-alloy. There are no rivet holes, and the surface is undecorated. It has suffered damage and is now bent in middle. Original length would have been circa 75mm. It is circa 5mm at the opening, and tapers to 3.5mm at the terminal. According to Egan and Pritchard (2002, p.282), the length of the object (over 40mm) means that its function is uncertain, whereas similar objects less than 40mm in length are certainly lace chapes.

Copper alloy probable scabbard chape. Sheet metal, rolled into a narrow cone with a butted seam; a decorative groove appears at the open end, and the chape is markedly pointed at the other. The finder kindly suggests an alternative identification as a lace end, however this reporter finds the object too acutely pointed at one end, and rather wide at the other, to fulfil that function.
