A copper alloy terminal-end ferrule of unknown use and uncertain date, possibly from the post medieval to modern period dating from around AD 1600 - 1950. It is a tapering hollow tubular body which contains wood. There is a soldered seam running along the tubular body with a circular rivet hole in each side of the metal. There is a jagged tear to the base of the seam. At the closed end is a solid pointed knop with a rounded collar. There is a band of white metal, perhaps solder, between the terminal and the hollow area.  The m…

A copper-alloy object of unknown function. The object is formed from a single piece of copper-alloy sheet being rolled into an elongated cone shape with a wider sub-rectangular end that then tapers to a sharp point. The seam is only visible on the reverse and is open, not soldered. Slightly flattened at the wider end, with the surface displaying a patchy green patina. Overall the object is 26.17mm in length, 9.17mm in width at the head and 2.20mm at the point and it weighs 2.49 grams. The object has no parallels but is similar in form to some lace tags, chapes, pegs or ox …

Copper alloy unidentified object. Possibly a lace end as kindly suggested by the finder. A short conical tube of sheet metal with an overlapping seam, smaller than the run of lace chapes, and splayed at its open end. Flattened. Roman rivets are also made in this form and the splayed end might alternatively point to this usage, as it seems unlikely to have arisen through use as a chape. Suggested date: Unknown, Roman to Medieval, 43-1600 Length: 18.8mm, Width: 7.3mm, Thickness (overall): 3.2mm, Weight: 0.41gms

A complete silver conical aiglet or lace tag. The aiglet is hollow. It has a rounded blunt tip. The seam butts up against each other. The socket is full of soil and other organic material. The top edge is incomplete with notches removed from it.  The top has been decorated with a horizontal triple groove running parallel to the top. The triple groove is formed of a thin groove top and bottom and a wider one in between. A copper-alloy incomplete pin or possibly lace chape / lace tag of uncertain date. This artefact weighs 0.41g and has a length of 33.0mm. The object has a circular cross-section with diameter of 2.2mmm, at the transverse worn break, and tapers to a point. The shaft has a bend approximately two thirds of the way towards the tip. A 'U' shaped notch is present, representing missing metal, from the shaft at the location of the change of angle. It is uncertain whether this is later damage or an error during initial production. A lateral mark in the side of the shaft starting at the worn br…

A cast copper-alloy Medieval or Post Medieval probable lace tag, dating to between c. 14th-to c. 17th centuries AD. This example has not been simply created from a copper-alloy sheet and rolled; rather, this object has a solid cast globular head which is attached through casting to a short rectangular sheet which has a rivet hole at the end. It would appear that there should have been a metal sheet opposite the first one which is now missing. The chape measures 20.5mm total length, 8.3mm diameter, 7.3mm wide. It weighs 3.62 grams. A similar object has been recorded onto the PAS datab…

A folded strip of copper alloy, folded length-ways and tapering towards a terminal that appears to consist of two rounded lobes, folded underneath the object as if to create a type of hinge. The opposing terminal is simply squared off with a rivet hole close to the end. Close to the opposing narrow terminal on the reverse a copper loop has been passed through the strip. It is unclear what this object functioned as however lace chapes of the medieval period were formed in a similar way; the addition of the copper 'loop' and the presence of hinge lugs tends to negate this explination ho…

A copper alloy possible lace chape. The object is roughly cylindrical (now slightly crushed), formed from a single sheet of copper alloy folded over. The object has a splayed foot that has small notches taken out from the edges as decoration, and a small splayed and notched terminal at the opposite end. The object bears similarities to medieval lace chapes, although the patina on this object suggests and older date. Further research and comparisions are being sought.

It measures 9.26mm in width and 16.1mm in extended length, weighing 0.75g.
