Copper alloy vessel sherd. It consists of part of the side wall and an out-turned rim. All edges terminate in old breaks and, as found, it measures 26.3mm in height and is 18.2 mm wide, with a side wall thickness tapering from 2.6mm at the lower edge to 4.9mm just below the rim. The inner face is a mid-green colour, and the outer face is blackened from smoke, so this is probably a fragment from a cooking vessel, probably a cauldron or posnet. Too little of the item remains for any more positive identification, and it probably dates from the late medieval to post medieval period, …

A rim fragment from a copper-alloy cooking vessel, of probable late medieval or early post medieval date. The fragment is roughly triangular in profile and gently curved in plan, and measures 69.9mm wide and a maximum of 52.1mm high. There is a swelling at the inner face, extending to a maximum thickness of 5.4mm and to a depth of 15.3mm below the bevelled rim. The average thickness of the side wall is approximately 3.5mm. It weighs 49.1g. The item is a dark green colour, with heavy black sooting evident at the outer surface. Although there is too little to make a definite p…

A Medieval to Post-Medieval copper-alloy foot and lower part of the leg from a cauldron or posnet, dating to AD 1200 - 1700. It is roughly rectangular in plan and is trapezoidal in cross-section. There is an irregular break at the top end. The foot end is relatively undamaged, and when standing the leg slopes inward from the foot to the top at an angle of around 20 degrees. There are three fluted longitudinal ribs, one central and two at the edges, which broaden as they go down the outer face. The inner face is slightly concave and undecorated. Both faces have traces of black carbonis…

A wheel made, ceramic, Roman narrow necked jar of local Upchurch ware dating from the late first century, AD43-70. Description: The base is narrow 62.09mm diameter, and from this point the sides flare rapidly outwards to 126mm diameter at the shoulder, before turning back in towards the rim which has a diameter of c.75.08mm. The rim is only slightly everted, with the shoulders sloping inwards from a mid-height waist point. There are three 4mm wide incised lines around the top half of the pot, forming cordoned decoration. The fabric is fairly smooth with small mica inclusions, lea…

A fragment of a cast copper alloy skillet or posnet leg with a mounded bulbous transverse collar above a slightly everted foot which is designed to look like a hoof. The foot is sub-rectangular in plan, triangular in profile and plano-convex in section, with a flat back at 90 degrees to the base. The upper edge is broken where it has been severed from the rest of the leg. There are patches of burnt organic material on the back and sides of the foot which would have adhered to the surface when the vessel was near the fire. This is similar to record PUBLIC-117E1D. The object has a short, flaring neck and broad shoulders with a large bulbous body and one complete handle which is attached to the outer rim just below the top and terminates on the most bulbous part of the shoulder. A fragment of the rim of a cast copper-alloy cooking vessel or cauldron. The edge of the rim is internally bevelled so that it is flush with the exterior but stepped on the interior, with a triangular profile, which is 7 mm thick before tapering to 4 mm below. The fragment has a layer of burnt black organic matter on the exterior, but a series of fine, parallel scratches at an angle of about 45 degrees to the rim cut through this layer, suggesting that they are post-deposition. The inner surface is smooth and flat, with some burnt organic matter trapped under the bevelled ridge that pr…

A copper-alloy fragment from the body of a cauldron. All of the edges are broken and uneven and the shallow curve of the wall suggests a large cauldron with a diameter of about 380 mm, that might hold about 7 gallons. The interior of the fragment is smooth and unencrusted. Much of the exterior is covered in a layer of burnt organic matter but has a very fine granular texture, suggesting a date of manufacture of the end of the 17th century, or later. Across the outer surface of fragment is a raised decorative band or 'wire' in the casting, that is 3 mm wide. Below this is an elo…

Detached leg from a copper alloy cooking pot or cauldron, probably of medieval or post-medieval date, c1200 - 1600. It is roughly pentagonal in plan and rectangular in section. The sides are parallel and it has a straight break at the upper end where it would have been attached. It slopes at an angle of c.30 degrees from the vertical and has a flattened foot. There are traces of sooting on all faces apart from the top, and where not present the item has a green patina. It is 18.6mm in height, 25.7mm wide and the thickness varies from 14.5 at the upper end to 13.8mm at the foot. It…

Cast copper alloy rim fragment from a bowl or cooking vessel with a 15 mm wide internally bevelled rim that is triangular in profile and flush with the upper edge of the vessel. The body of the vessel curves downwards slightly, in profile, to suggest a shallow straight-sided bowl, and the curvature of the rim, in plan, suggests a diameter of about 300 mm. The bevelled rim itself is 6 mm thick which then tapers to the body which is 5 mm thick. The interior surface of the fragment is pitted from the sand casting process and the exterior surface has many parallel horizontal lines which a…

A rim fragment from a cast copper alloy cauldron. The fragment is 75 mm in width, 41 mm in height and 3.5 mm thick, widening to 6 mm thick at the rim and a weight of 57.3 g. The rim is out-turned and bevelled on its inner edge with the upper face flat, so that it is triangular in section. The curvature of the rim suggests that it would have been 280 mm in diameter which falls comfortably within the normal range for a cauldron and suggests a vessel with a capacity of between 4½ and 6 gallons. The exterior surface is rough and has patches of black burnt organic matter encrusted on…
