Copper alloy plate brooch. Cast discoid plate retaining paired lugs for a probably iron spring and an opposed catch plate. Extensive rust on the back may arise from decay of the pin and may incorporate mineral preserved textile traces. The front bears the bordered relict of a curvilinear design in which a reflective spot of enamel appears. This could perhaps suggest a brooch of Weetch type 18, c. AD800-900, though earlier plate brooches include the use of enamel in more symmetrical arrangements. Suggested date: Unknown, Roman to Early Medieval, 100-1000 Diameter: 28.6mm, Thickness (pl…

An incomplete copper alloy Roman trumpet brooch dating from AD 75 -175. The brooch is mostly complete; the foot, catchplate and most of the pin are missing. An incomplete and mishapen Anglo-Saxon copper alloy applied saucer brooch. The brooch is bent and cracked horizontaly through the centre,Folding it to 90 degrees, this was probably caused by contact with agricultural machinery. It is encusted and there is no decoration visible suggesting this may be the backplate, and would have been circular and possibly concave. The pin is missing, but the hinge and keep are both present and are probably held in place by solder. A similar example is recorded in PUBLIC-2457C1 Weight: 5.66gms Diameter: 33.1mm Thickness 1.1mm Height at hinge plate: 8mm

The brooch has a cruciform head of cross potent form with a curved and keeled projecting mid bow with central longitudinal, and a lightly tapered oval-ended foot with a midpoint cross-ridge, and with a folded catch plate behind it.
