Fragment of a probable copper alloy Roman plate brooch, inlaid with enamel, dating to the 2nd century AD (100-200AD). The object is oval in plan and slightly convex on the outer face. There is a break at the top and bottom of the object.  This suggests that the object could be a large roundel from the centre of a brooch bow.  It is decorated on the outer face with a series of concentric circular cells, the largest of which contains blue enamel or glass. The inner circles appear to contain degraded enamel or glass, which is a rusty brown colour. The reverse is plain.  …

Copper alloy brooch fragment. Probably the lower bow from a large headstud brooch, Mackreth type Headstud 3.a or 5.a (depending on whether the lost pin was sprung or hinged). The mid to lower bow bears about eight rectangular cells apt to receive enamel, though no trace of colorant appears. The bow tapers gently to a drum-shaped pedestal foot with an annulus in its base. Two iron blades and possibly another implement for a folding knife, retained between fragmentary flat plain copper alloy side plates of thickness 0.7mm by long rivets – whether one or two is now uncertain. A flat oval plate with faint traces of cross-hatching marks the end of the knife handle. Side plates of bone or ivory would have been secured outside the copper plates which remain and would have butted up to the end plate. Raggedly broken at both ends of its short remaining extent. This might suggest multiple casting flaws, the vigorous dismantling of an object for recycling, or recurrent plough-strike damage - pot legs are robust objects and this pattern of breakage is unusual.
