An incomplete late Mesolithic or Neolithic stone implement, possibly an axe, adze or mace (c. 7000 BC-c. 2350 BC). This object may have been oval and symmetrical in shape when complete. In plan, the fiished end is evenly rounded and the sides flare to a break either side of the hourglass perforation. A break has occurred mid-way across the perforation. In cross-section the perforation seems to have had a diameter of about 17.5mm. One face is slightly more convex that the other face and each face have striations. The implement is made of an unidentified igneous rock. It is dark g

An incomplete Mesolithic (probably) flint blade (c. 10000 BC-c. 4001 BC). The proximal end of this tertiary blade has been lost due to a transverse break. Consequently, the bulb of percussion is not present. The dorsal face has three longitudinal removals. A flake scar on the ventral face appears to be recent damage. This translucent blade is off-white, light grey and orange. Length: 20.8mm; width: 9.1mm; thickness: 1.8mm. Weight: 0.47g.

Dark brown flint with cortex, debitage. Four flakes of distinctively coloured flint reported together as from the same location, together with a Late Mesolithic core (NLM-318B30). The characteristics of this group include hard-hammer trimming of cortex, the removal of parallel flakes, and in one case a markedly concave ventral surface. These are all consistent with an origin in the same episode of working with a selected non-local flint. Suggested date: Late Mesolithic, 7000-4000 BC. Combined Weight: 24.44gms

Blue grey flint with cortex patch, core fragment. Chip from a larger core bearing long narrow parallel flake removal scars from unidirectional working on one side; the reverse is uneven, and probably broken in antiquity. Patches of misty patina extend over all surfaces, suggesting a period of weathering after deposition. Suggested date: Late Mesolithic, 7000-4000 BC. Length: 50.5mm, Width: 25.5mm, Thickness: 12.6mm, Weight: 16.87gms.

An incomplete struck flint blade of Mesolithic date, c. 8000-4000 BC. Only the proximal and part of the mesial section of the blade survive, with the rest having broken away in a step truncation which possibly occurred on detachment. The blade demonstrates two dorsal arrises, comprising at least two or three prior removals. On the ventral face of the piece, a prominent bulb of percussion and punctiform platform indicate that this piece was probably removed through use of hard hammer percussion. The blade was struck from a core of blackish grey flint, and is in extremely fresh conditio…

A complete struck flake of probable Mesolithic date, c. 8000-4000 BC. The secondary flake has been struck from a core of dark bluish-grey coloured flint with large greyish inclusions, with most of its spine (c. 30-40% of its total surface) covered with cortex which itself is a light pinkish brown in colour. The ventral side of the flake demonstrates prominent ripples consistent with hard hammer percussion, while part of the platform seems to have splintered away on detachment. This spllintering is likely responsible for the spall removal on the dorsal face of the flake. A small amount…

A complete knapped flint core of Mesolithic date, c. 8000-4000 BC. The core is sub-cylindrical in form and has two opposing platforms, one of which demonstrates apparently somewhat more use than the other. The original support evidently started life as a blade core (as evinced by numerous blade negatives on the face of the core) although the final act of the knapper seems to have been to remove two large flakes before discarding the piece, one terminating in a hinge fracture and the other terminating in a feather removal (although incompletely). This has obscured the mainstay of the o…

A complete knapped flint single-platformed blade core of Mesolithic date, c. 8000-4000 BC. The core is of somewhat irregular sub-cylindrical form, and has been manufactured on a raw material of fine-grained dark blackish grey flint with a lightish grey cortex. The piece survives in extremely fresh condition and at the keel of the core some minor iron staining is visible. The removal face of the core demonstrates four fairly regular negative blade removals, one of which has terminated in an irregular hinge. The large size of this hinge likely prevented further removals from the platfor…

An incomplete fragment of a fire-cracked Mesolithic blade-core, probably sub-conical in shape and possibly with a single platform. Only part of the core detachment face and platform remain, the rest missing in a break which was probably co-incident with the core beign burnt. The fire-crazing covers all the surfaces of the object, which is now a calcined grey colour interspersed with patches of white. A complete Mesolithic flaked flint pick, or 'Pycombe Adze' (9000- 4000 BC). Butler 2005: 106, fig. 42). This slender implement is sub-rectangular in plan and sub-rectangular in cross-section. It is matt orange and has been 'beach-rolled'. This implement was probably made from an elongated pebble. Length: 132.2mm; width: 42.9mm; thickness: 27.7mm. Weight: 199.94g. An incomplete knapped / struck flint blade probably dating to the late Mesolithic period, circa 7000-3500 BC. The blade is sub-rectangular in plan and roughly triangular in profile. No cortex is present indicating that this is a tertiary blade. The flint is a translucent light -mid brown colour. The dorsal surface as a single central longitudinal ridge. Evidence of retouch on all edges. Concoindal ripples are present on the ventral surface and there is some damage probably caused by movement in the plough soil. Length: 29.24mm. Width: 11.09mm. Thickness: 3.21mm. Weight: 1.0g.

A complete late Mesolithic to Early Neolithic blade tool manufactured on a tertiary blade (6500 BC-2900 BC). This blade is sub-rectangular in plan and widens at the distal end. The dorsal surface has four major flake removals. The left edge and the lower right edge are finely denticulated. Two notches on the right have been retouched although not so finely. The ventral face has a bulb of percussion and associated ripples. It is finely denticulated on the right upper edge and also on the right side of the distal end. A small collection of worked flints, dating from the Mesolithic period through to the Early Bronze Age. The collection includes four waste flakes, weighing 48g. Two of the flakes have bulbs of percussion. One of which is simply a waste flake, the other could have been worked along the platform edge of the bulb, though neither flake has been made into a tool. There is also a small (probably) Mesolithic blade, weighing 1.14g. The blade shows evidence of retouch, no bulb of percussion survives due to that fact that the flake has snapped (horizontally) in half; the ripples (which show wher…
