Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete Early Bronze Age copper alloy long flanged developed axehead dating to circa 2050BC - 1700 BC. The axehead is sub rectangular in cross section and has a shallow lenticular side profile. There is a proto stop ridge / median bevel which is now barely visible due to corrosion and the developed patina. The axehead has a rounded butt end. The external edges are worn and have a slight hammer raised flange. The object then extends to a crescentic flared blade/cutting edge which is worn and slightly chipped. The object has a light green to brown coloured pitted surfac…

Grey flint scraper. A small thumbnail scraper with covering angled scalar retouch across its dorsal side and with a bulbar ventral surface. The broad butt – probably the striking platform – bears short abrupt retouch executed from the ventral aspect, perhaps to enable pressure to be brought to bear on the working edge opposite. Suggested date: Early Bronze Age, 2350-1600 BC. Length: 17.4mm, Width: 19.7mm, Thickness: 7.4mm, Weight: 2.72gms

Cream coloured flint barbed and tanged arrowhead. A lentoid section arrowhead bearing covering angled scalar retouch across both sides, with one of its barbs lost to an ancient break. This large heavy example was probably designed as a hunting arrowhead whose broad cutting edge would maximise tissue damage and blood loss to the quarry, both slowing it and enabling it to be trailed by hounds. The patina indicates the object has endured prolonged exposure to a calcareous environment. Suggested date: Early Bronze Age, 2350-1600 BC Length: 45.3mm, Width: 29.2mm, Thickness: 6.5mm, Wei…

Brown flint with cortex, and with a spot of re-formed cortex, debitage. A small thick flake with broad flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a platform at one end of its bulbar ventral surface – where cortex had re-formed. Short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows one straight edge, suggesting a short period of probably improvised use, perhaps of an older flake. Dark grey flint, possibly collected from the East Coast, scraper. A thick leaf-shaped flake with broad flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a concave ventral surface with a bulb at one end. An incomplete copper alloy chisel or possible miniature axehead dating to the Early Bronze Age (c. 2000BC -1700 BC). The object is trapezoidal in plan and wedge-shaped in cross-section with a flaring cutting edge and narrowed shaft. The sides descend from the butt almost vertically then fan out in a smooth curve to form the, now chipped, cutting edge. For a comparable example see PAS record LIN-9CD5CA. According to Brundle (2021) 'diminutive axes are often associated with Roman votive offerings. However, the axe recorded here is clearly of a Bronze Age form. Miniature flat axes …
