Copper alloy seal matrix. Cast circular matrix with a tapered faceted handle with a collared trefoil suspension loop. The handle and loop are abraded but the engraved matrix remains crisp. It depicts [on the imprint] a stag running left, with the legend: *TIMET E DEVM [he fears God?] – this reporter would welcome a reading making better use of the middle E character. Malcolm Jones kindly comments: 'It's the common inscription TIMETE DEVM [fear God] -- a (plural) imperative -- the E between the stag;s legs belongs to the incomplete TIMET'. Suggested dat…

Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Copper alloy mount. Cast oval plate with four teardrop-shaped hollows on its display side, one now open, and with the stubs of three integrally cast prongs on the back. The integral prongs would usually point to a post-medieval date. However, the reddish cast to the metal, the worn surface condition and the – for that later period – unusual form may rather point to an Anglo-Scandinavian context for this object. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 950-1050

Copper alloy mount. Cast plate bearing the three-dimensional concavo-convex openwork inmage of a proto-heraldic lion walking left with tail above its body and four ball-shaped paws. Like NLM-AF619C this falls short of the proto-heraldic form of those buckle plates ascribed to the early 13th century, though this is less at variance with their character than that object. A rivet of diameter 1.9mm and length 4mm was set in each corner of the frame. Suggested date: Medieval, 1175-1225
Length: 24.4mm, Height: 22.5mm, Thickness/Height (i.e. projection, clear of rivets): 8.4mm, Weight: 7.21gms

Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Copper alloy buckle plate. Cast openwork buckle plate with the strongly three-dimensionally moulded openwork image of a maned lion walking left, hollowed behind. The mane and the sides of the mask are rendered with broad cuts and the hind limbs and tails are much more angular than is usual with the proto-heraldic examples of this form. A hand-cut zig-zag incised border frames the motif, which also has a drilled fixing hole at the lion’s rump. A slotted and folded tab projects at the outer end of the plate to clasp a buckle frame [lost]. The heavy moulding tends to suggest a Roman…

Copper alloy and iron stirrup mount. Cast sub-triangular copper alloy plate with a thick stepped basal flange projecting at an oblique angle. The copper alloy plate bears symmetrical moulded decoration in a sunken field, Williams Class A Type 2B, possibly representing two beasts facing each other and looking upwards at a globe which may itself depend from moulded strips below the apical trefoil top, which is spurred to achieve that form. Three heavy iron fixing pins pass through the plate at its apex and towards either bottom corner. This type is most commonly reported – three ex…
