An incomplete post medieval lead alloy boatswain's (bosun) whistle, dating to the 15th-16th century. The gun, keel and part of the buoy remain. The gun is cylindrical with a thicker section at the mouthpiece. The keel is in the form of an open work scroll, with two loops that would have been used to suspend the whistle around the neck using ribbon, silk or string (Redknap, 2005, 284-5). The central panel of the scrolling keel is decorated with a moulded series of dashes. The buoy has been crushed so it is impossible to determine its original shape. As they were a symbol of status, …

TREASURE CASE 2014 T196: Incomplete silver whistle of post-medieval date. The whistle has been formed from silver sheet, rolled and soldered together. The whistle has three distinct elements: the mouthpiece, the body, and the open end. These three components are separated by two collars of spiral coiled silver wire (often known as 'cannetille') with a central core of silver wire of the same thickness. These collars are soldered on to the sheet metal body of the whistle. The mouthpiece is incomplete, having lost most of its silver tubing in antiquity. The central body of the …

An almost complete cast tin alloy, possibly pewter, hawking whistle or post medieval date likely c.AD 1700-1800. The end is now a slight crescent shape but was kindly demonstrated by the finder as still functional. The body has a crescent-shaped sound hole cut into the top side, above which are two grooved concentric circles. Attached to the body is a cyclindrical extension, attached to which is a spherical knop that has a circular suspension loop drilled into it.…
