Description: The terminal is shaped as a three dimensional acorn moulded in one piece, detailing the cup and nut with a central conical knob. The base of the acorn has a circular cross sectioned shank below an integral collar that terminates in an historic break.
Measurements: Length: 35.31 mm; Width: 16.09 mm; Thickness: 9.41 mm and Weight: 23.85 g.
Discussion: This object is likely a furniture fitting, due to it's size and form. The dating is more complicated. Similar objects, KENT-C54637 and BERK-E257D3, have been attributed to Romano-British furniture fittings. However, other examples, NLM-AE25EA and ESS-B1BA85, have been dated to the Post-Medieval. Both Roman and Post-Medieval objects have been found in the surrounding area, thus it is difficult to define further.Catalogue No.1821364317004KENT2024-03-21T12:15:13Z2024-03-26T12:08:46Z23.85PAS65FC24D1001E7E9.4116.0935.3117141141421182101830218242KentSwaleHartlipTQ836451.345617350.62627357bands.shops.handy10KENT-C255E0Copper alloy10627CastCompleteROMANx41218POST MEDIEVALx41047Metal detectorReturned to finderKENT-C24D1E_6602b73015cb6.jpg1269616images/isabelledigglekent/South EastCertain12024-03-26T12:08:46.305Zfinds-11566641156664SUR-C247E7DRESS HOOKPOST MEDIEVALAn incomplete cast copper alloy early post medieval blunt-hooked clasp of Read's (2008) Class A, Type 10. Cast great square headed brooch retaining the head plate and mid-bow; foot lost. A trapezoid head plate bears a rhomboid projection at either corner, with three zones of rouletted or stamped ornament between the rhomboids as an outer order. The rhomboid pprojections are coated in white metal. A square frame of two orders with possibly stamped texture confines a small central field of Salin Style 1 ornament, with a pellet or eye at its top right-hand corner. The head plate is abutted by a four-sided pyramidal mid-bow boss with projecting solid cylindrical lug – some brooches might bear inset stones at such a location – with this constricted element separating the head from the lower bow. On the back, the end of a rivet of diameter 3mm appears at this position, and it may be the end of the rivet which projects on the front. A symmetrical panel with curved top and large rounded lappets appears below the boss. The outer part of each lappet is thinned and plain, as if it had lost an applied plate of decorated metal. Stamped dots decorate a border, which encloses two spiral eye-like configurations of lines above a constricted T-shaped field in which further Style 1 eye and interlace appear. A billeted frame extends so far as this part remains; the foot is lost beyond the site of a further expansion of the form. The stubs of paired lugs and a catch plate appear on the back, along with rust stains which hint at the loss of an iron pin which was attached to the brooch when it was buried. Traces of gilding appear on the display side. Darkened by treatment with 'preservation wax' by the finder [this was taken to be an oil by this reporter; the finder kindly corrects this point] which obscures the bimetallic plating. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 500-575

Extensive surface loss has occurred along the edges and surfaces of the find, giving the axe and thin irregular form.
The butt end is sub-square, and is slightly more truncated to one side. From the butt, the sides flare slightly. The side flanges are missing; however, the stop ridge is still prominently visible, especially on one side. From the stop ridge, the blade tapers slightly (due to surface loss) before flaring marginally to the cutting edge which is heavily truncated and rounded. A partial rib is visible on one face of the blade. The blade would have originally been much wider. There is no evidence for side loops, however due to the condition of the object it is not possible to determine if it would have originally had one.

The flat base would permit use as a standing weight with a balance, possibly representing one quarter uncia. Inset objects are more usually associated with Viking weights but this object pays no discernible regard to what are believed to be Viking units of measurement for silver bullion, though Anglo-Saxon weights sometimes respected Roman measures.
