A fragment of a silver hunting whistle. The fragment comprises the mouthpiece and part of the cylindrical body, together with one of a probable pair of twisted silver wire bands. The whistle has been cut from silver sheet and soldered; the obliquely-angled mouthpiece has been soldered on separately and there is a D-shaped sound-hole. The remains of the body is now flattened and torn and retains part of the decoration which comprises a chevron of punched floral ornament bordered by punched wafflework.

David Higgins of Liverpool University comments: "These bowls are presumably made of some form of pewter or lead based alloy rather than pure lead - probably the same material as they make die cast metal soldiers and cars from....this type of bowl comes from a toy whistle of late nineteenth or early twentieth century date" (Pers.comm 4/7/12). Further information on this artefact type can be seen in the Society for Clay Pipe Research Newlstter 76, page 43 'Metal Pipes and Toy Whistles' (2009). The pipe bowl is incomplete and mis-shapen, but initially had a diameter of approximately …

An incomplete cast possible tin/lead-alloy or pewter whistle dating from the post-Medieval to modern period (c.1800-1900). The whistle is decorated with at least three round mouldings along its body. There is one large knop on one moulding and up to four smaller knops on the other, possibly for small attachment loops for bells or other rattling equipment. The mouth piece is at one end of the whistle, with a sound hole just in front. The other end of the whistle is broken. Most of these whistle rattles are known to have been made in silver which would have probably been much healthier …

A handmade bone whistle of uncertain date. The whistle is plano-convex in plan with a flat top and curved base and is ovoid in section. A drilled or bored hole is present at the proximal end of the whistle creating a wind way, though this appears to be infilled with organic material, and a triangular recessed lip is carved into the flat upper surface exposing more of the wind way. A sub rectangular projection is present from the outer curved edge of the whistle within which is another drilled or bored hole. The projection is shallow resulting in the majority of the hole running horizo…

An incomplete Post Medieval lead alloy whistle, dating late 16th - early 17th century. The whistle has a central tube with aperture which has been squashed shut. The central tube is conical, open at one end and has a closed, rounded end at the other. There are also the remains of decorative elements projecting from each side. These may be the remains of a double-headed bird of prey which flanks both sides. The tube is also decorated with moulded feather motifs and two egg and dart friezes around the top. On the back is the fragment of a ring that was soldered on. This ring may …

Cast copper alloy 'hawking' whistle, cylindrical but waisted in plan and circular in section. At the broader closed end there is a spherical knop and at its widest point, the bulbous body is incised with a line that runs around the diameter of the whistle. At the opposite end, the mouthpiece, the circular terminal has been interrupted by a flattened U-shaped section at a 45° angle for the upper lip to rest on, which funnels the air into the whistle. Beyond this raised terminal, on the opposite side to the mouthpiece, is a triangular recessed aperture with a triangular blow-hole. …

Copper alloy whistle probably for hawking Post-medieval 1500 to 1800 AD. The whistle is circular in cross section. The mouth of the whistle is slight tapered and there is an oval half moon shaped opening just beneath the mouth. The base of the whistle is closed by a suspension loop. The body is decorated with a series of engraved lines in the form of creating a zig zag pattern. A number of whistles have been recorded by the PAS, however a direct parallel has not been found. It is likely that the dating of this whistle falls within the period 1500-1800. The whistle is associated with a…

A sheet copper-alloy whistle of probable Post-Medieval date. It is formed from a single sheet of copper-alloy folded to give the whistle a tubular form that has been partially flattened due to post-depositional damage. The mouthpiece is flattened on its base to produce a D-shaped aperture with D-shaped sound hole on the upper surface of the whistle above. On the upper surface of the mouthpiece there is incised decoration comprising a single transverse grooved border from which multiple longitudinal grooves run to the sound hole. A complete but slightly damaged post-Medieval copper-alloy whistle (c. 1800-c.1880). The barrel tapers from the terminal towards the mouth-piece with sound holes on opposite sides nearer to the narrow end. There is a soldered seam along the full length of the barrel or tube. The terminal end is in the form of a domed cap. Between the cap and the barrel a pronounced collar has circumferential 'beading' on the outer edge. There is similar circumferential beading on the cap as well as comma-like motifs. At the centre of the cap there is a separate copper-alloy wire loop which is att…

Lead alloy whistle. A cast conical tube with an open mouthpiece at its narrower end and a separately modelled inserted terminal at its broader end. The latter bears a stalk ending in a spherical suspension loop with drilled aperture. An internal metal reed is revealed by opposed holes in the upper and lower sides near the midpoint of the tube. White metal plating traces remain overall. The whistle still sounds if blown. Lead alloy whistle. Short cast cylinder with a moulded and rounded end with a projecting and drilled lug for suspension, and with a D-shaped cut-out adjacent to a narrowed mouthpiece. Now bent. The robust construction might suggest this to have been for police or military use as an official issue, though whistles would also be used to control gun dogs. A dark grey hawking whistle most likely made from tin alloy. Cylindrical in shape with a tapering end and broken extension piece, possibly for an attachment loop. A thin raised ring at the top seperates the body of the whistle from the mouth-piece. Immediately below this upper ring is the semi-circular aperture which allows the sound to escape. The object is mostly intact although here is damage to the end of the mouthpiece, and some distortion of shape from erosion processes. Description: Treasure reference 2019 T11; an incomplete silver post-medieval whistle dating to the period c. AD 1500 - 1650. Only approximately one quarter of the tubular body survives, the surviving part being from the terminal-end of the whistle. The tubular body is made from a single sheet of silver, which has been rolled to form a cylinder. This body is divided into two sections by a collar of coiled silver wire (known as 'cannetille'). The terminal-end to one side of this collar is undecorated and has a simple rolled-over rim. The tubular body to the other side of the collar…
