Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Shropshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Incomplete cast copper alloy double looped buckle of probable post-medieval date (1600-1750). The buckle frame is incomplete being broken into two parts across one of the loops. This break is relatively fresh and unabraded, probably being caused by movement in the ploughsoil. Originally in plan the buckle would have been sub-oval with a slight central bar to which a pin would have been attached. The pin is present but detached. It is formed from a single length of tapered copper alloy which has been bent around the central axis bar. The upper surface of the pin has been decorated with …

The artefact is an inverted U-shape with a dished inside edge, there is a crest that runs across that top of the apex of the arch and as well as performing a being decorative role, would have also added strength to the piece. There is a rivet hole in the in the centre of both sides both of which still retains the remains of an iron rivet. The sides narrow inward slightly so that the base of the rear arch is 27mm long while the base of the forward edge is 22mm, furthermore, one side is …

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Flint single-platform microlith blade core, triangular in plan, oval in section and trapezoidal in profile. The core has had blades taken off it on only two thirds of the way around its central axis, with a layer of cortex running from one third of the edge of the platform down to the base of the core. The flint is a translucent brown-grey colour and the curvature of the core suggests that it was made from a local beach pebble. The length to breadth ratio is 4:5, which is usual for micro-cores. Bond (2004) illustrates similar examples on page 120, Fig.5.104, No.82, which is dated…

Flint snapped end scraper, semi-circular in plan, triangular in section and in profile. The proximal end and both sides of the dorsal face have been unimarignally retouched. There is also a nick in the right edge of the dorsal face, but this is probably due to damage and not deliberate. The scraper may have been broken through use if enough pressure was applied to shear it off from the other half that was still held in the haft. Alternatively, it may have been broken since being deposited through coming into contact with agricultural machinery. See CORN-2286F2 and CORN-24A3D6 for si…

Flint leaf-shaped arrowhead, lozenge-shaped in plan, profile and triangular in section. The arrowhead has been worked on all margins of the dorsal face, but has been more extensively worked towards the distal end, particularly along the left margin. The proximal end has been waisted to be better used for hafting, and has been broken off above the bulb of percussion, on the ventral face. The flint is a grey brown colour and translucent, and was probably knapped from a local beach pebble. The length to breadth ratio is about 3:2. Bond (2004) illustrates a similar example on page 14…

Pottery rim sherd from a bowl with a 'Cornish flanged' (Quinnell, 2004, p.124) rim. The flange below the rim is rounded and made of an added strip which has been applied to the body of the bowl. The angle of the flange is at about 90 degrees from the rim of the bowl. Above the flange is a recessed groove which helps to define it from the rim. The fabric is is a light orangey brown colour throughout and contains mica, felspar and augite inclusions, which suggests that it is made from gabbroic clay, originating from the Lizard. Incomplete wire copper alloy bow brooch with short bilateral spring, coiled into 5 loops on a central, solid copper alloy axial rod, which holds the spring together. The chord seems to be missing but it could only have been attached to one end of the spring as the other end is in the centre, next to the central coil which extends to form part of the bow. The bow is broken and bent at an angle from subsequent damage, so the original curvature cannot be made out. The foot, pin and catchplate are missing. Fragment of a glass bowl with an everted folded rim. The bowl was likely shallow with a broad rim. The rim is oval in section and the bowl would have been circular in plan.
