Object type: STRAP END
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Copper alloy and textile strap end. A pair of plates or a single plate folded lengthways with an ogival outer end and a rivet hole of diameter 1.6mm at its inner end, which was probably engrailed. A further rivet at the front end was only noted during image processing. Woven fabric, now of a buff tint, remains trapped between the plates. This might point to a later medieval date within the available range as sumptuary laws enacted following the Black Death, particularly the Statute of 1369, restricted the wearing of leather straps by the lesser sort. Suggested date: Medieval, 1250-1400…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Copper alloy unidentified object fragment. A fragment of pressed metal sheet with a series of closely-spaced grooves with a central impression, and with a small [diameter 1.7mm] fixing hole to one side. Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Copper alloy mount. Cast plate bearing the three-dimensional concavo-convex openwork inmage of a proto-heraldic lion walking left with tail above its body and four ball-shaped paws. Like NLM-AF619C this falls short of the proto-heraldic form of those buckle plates ascribed to the early 13th century, though this is less at variance with their character than that object. A rivet of diameter 1.9mm and length 4mm was set in each corner of the frame. Suggested date: Medieval, 1175-1225

Copper alloy buckle plate. Cast openwork buckle plate with the strongly three-dimensionally moulded openwork image of a maned lion walking left, hollowed behind. The mane and the sides of the mask are rendered with broad cuts and the hind limbs and tails are much more angular than is usual with the proto-heraldic examples of this form. A hand-cut zig-zag incised border frames the motif, which also has a drilled fixing hole at the lion’s rump. A slotted and folded tab projects at the outer end of the plate to clasp a buckle frame [lost]. The heavy moulding tends to suggest a Roman…
