An unusual gold-plated (with foil) silver denarius of Severus Alexander (AD 221-35). The core of the forgery is probably a base metal denarius common of the time, which has been overlaid with a sheet of gold. The reverse of the coin clearly shows the folded over edges of the sheet, which do not extend far on the reverse side, leaving the centre of the coin exposed. The reason for this is unknown and no other examples are in the British Museum collections at the time of recording.
