A collection of field walked finds from the Sykehouse area of Doncaster has been recorded under individual records which are all linked to this one. Perforated stone spindle whorl or net weight of unknown date – probably Mesolithic – Modern (6500 BC – 1800 AD). The stone used to make the artefact is a micaceous sandstone which is a mid brown grey colour. The weight is irregular being broadly sub-circular in plan and D shaped in cross section. The central hole is drilled from both ends, is broadly circular in shaped and waisted (egg-timer) in cross section. The maximum diameter of the hole measures 8.4mm. An oblong stone smoother that could date from the Prehistoric to early Modern periods. The stone is subrectangular in plan and sub-drop-shaped in section. The entire surface is smooth, as if river-worn, but the object was found on agricultural land. The stone is igneous, and probably a basalt.
