A black polished stone tool or implement, of probable Neolithic to Post medieval date (c. 2500 BC - 1900AD). It is oval in plan and sub oval in cross section. The stone is thickest in the centre, tapering down towards each end. It is black in colour with a smooth, polished surface. There are three grooves present which are brown in colour, probably due to the presence of dried mud. Evident on both ends are striations possibly caused by the object being repeatedly rubbed against a hard surface, suggesting that it was possibly used as a burnishing or smoothing tool. It could possibl…

A thick, broad cortical flake from an orangey grey translucent chert nodule. The ventral surface has parallel feathered flakes invading from the margins but this may not be intentional as it is accompanied by bruising and crushing damage. This sort of appearance can be found on hammer stones but this is an awkward shape and may have been used as a striker against a lump of iron pyrites. This produces a weak spark which with skill can make fire.D.L.Clarke(1970) illustrates 2 examples in a Beaker context where the striker is found with a corroded lump of 'iron ore' on page 374, fig 780 …

Incomplete flint axehead of Neolithic date (3500 BC – 2100 BC). One end of the axe survives the remainder is lost to an old break. This is probably the butt end and represents about one third of unusually large axe. The butt is rounded and the sides taper outward from the butt. It is pointed oval in section, thickening from the flat butt to the break. The axe was shaped with large, invasive shallow flakes then smaller shallow scaler retouch covering the entire surface of both sides. It is 83.4mm long, 75.9mm wide and 40.8mm thick; it weighs 229.4 grams. Flaked axes were used as tools…

Lump of calcinated flint. 62.7mm long, 36.7mm wide, 32.6mm thick and 86 grams in weight. The piece appears to be a fragment from an unshaped nodule and in thus hard to date. The piece was found with SUSS-F6E000 and therefore may date to a similar period. Calcinated flint (produced by heating flint to a high temprature and then cooling it either naturally or quickly by quenching in water), was used as temper in Bronze Age and Neolithic pottery in this region and more recently as pottery temper and as an ingrediecnt for glass and glazes. It is also a common by-product of heating chalk t…

A Prehistoric - Post Medieval rounded stone (Highland granite) object possibly a grinder or a smoother. The stone has been worked to form a globular shape with one surface slightly flattened, possibly through use. Jon Cotton and Geoff Egan suggest that it may be a grinder or have a use in the laundry process but it is a little small to be a linen smoother. It is impossible to assign a date with any degree of certainty. The stone could have been deliberately brought to London for manufacturing or it may have arrived in London as ballast and then be modified. Dimensions: diame…

A worked flint axe of Neolithic date (c. 3500 - c. 2100 BC). The implement has been extensively knapped into a sub-oval shape. One terminal is slightly pointed (W.: 26mm), the other is rounded (W.: 41.25mm). One surface is flatter than the other and this surface bears a central trace of the external cortex. The rounded butt end of the implement bears the finest working. The is damage to both of the edges which have possibly been used for hammering. The axe slightly tapers from the butt end; the axe is therefore wedge-shaped and oval in section. The other terminal is slightly pointed, …
