A fragment of a copper alloy figurine of uncertain date, possibly Roman to Medieval (AD 1-1500). The fragment is sub-square in plan and curves in profile. The details represent the top of a figure's head with forehead, hair combed back and the top of the ear visible. The hair appears to have been painted red. The patina is light green. A similar fragment recorded on the PAS database is LEIC-328D15. However, this example shows more detail in the hairstyle more securely suggesting the figurine depicted a Roman female. Owing to the lack of such detail in the fragment in question a bro…

A fragment of a ceramic vessel of uncertain date. The fragment is a body sherd with hard and coarse fabric of a dark brownish-orange colour. Numerous small quartz inclusions are present within the fabric. The fragment is 52.5mm long, 23.8mm wide, 10mm thick and weighs 15.5g. Generic fabric types such as this with no specific diagnostic features can be difficult to date precisely and range from Iron Age to medieval in date. However, it seems probable that this sherd is from a hand made vessel which suggests an earlier date.

An incomplete copper alloy loop, possibly related to horse harnesses or cart fittings, such as a terret ring or reign guide. The loop is plain and undecorated but taper in thickness slightly from one surviving terminal to the other. This object is unlikely to be a bracelet because it has an oval cross section, differing to those of bracelets. Due to the object's fragmentary nature, assigning a specific date is not possible, although it is unlikely to date to the prehistoric periods.

A probably late early-medieval to medieval cast copper alloy terminal. It is in the form of a curved cylindrical bar (29.20mm long), which tapers to a point (with worn break across it) while the other terminal is expanded to 8.3mm, where there is a trapezoidal (spatulate) projection. This projection is 7.6mm wide and 4.34mm thick, with the width expanding to 13.85mm at the terminal, but decreasing in thickness to 2.41mm. There are possibly two small circular eyes, however this may simply be areas of corrosion. It weighs 10.90 g. The original surface of the metal has been removed, exce…

Both sides of the weight are decorated with raised pellets and ribs, although these are more pronounced on one side. These weighs are not yet completely understood. Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Dorset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A gilt-copper-alloy mount of uncertain date. The mount is of flat section and broadly pelta-shaped in plan, having a shallower indentation on one side than on the other. The central projection has a squared-off end. Perimeter grooves exist on both sides of the piece; however, these grooves only extend along two of the three edges. There is an in situ copper-alloy rivet with domed head, located at the centre of the piece. The curvature of the mount suggests it once fitted to a rounded object, such as a helmet. The side with the deeper curvature has a transverse crack.

An incomplete cast copper alloy bar of uncertain dating, but possibly Medieval in origin (12th to 15th Centuries AD). The bar is sub rectangular in plan, and lentoid in cross section. It exhibits five double ridges (bands) equally spaced down the length of the bar. Each single ridge is approximately 1.8mm wide. The base of the bar looks intact and consists of a rounded end, whereas the top is broken across the width, exhibiting an old break with a rectangular cross section. A lead plano-convex spindle whorl. The spindle whorl is 32.81 mm in diameter with a central perforation that is 8.32 mm in diameter. Both sides of the whorl are decorated, four regularly spaced circular dots in relief, the other with regular lines that expand at an angle from the central perforation to the edge. It has been noted that the weight of a spindle whorl is demonstrative of the thickness of yarn produced, with lighter spindle whorls (3 - 5 grams) being used for spinning cotton and the heavier ones (30 - 35 grams) for spinning wool (Margeson 1993, page 184).
