A fragment of a cast copper alloy trumpet brooch, comprising the incomplete head and part of the bow, of early Roman date (c. AD 75-175). The lower bow, spring and pin are missing. The brooch's head is sub-circular in plan. The bow is curving with a debased acanthus moulding at the mid-point. The rest of the bow has broken off beside the acanthus moulding.
Dimensions: length 30.37mm, width of head 8.7mm, width of acanthus moulding 9.08mm, thickness 11.91mm. Weight 7.63g.

An incomplete cast copper alloy Colchester Trumpet brooch, dating to the Roman period, between AD 43 – 200 (length: 41.5mm; width at head: 15mm; thickness/ depth: 21mm; weight: 16.5g).

The brooch is T-shaped in plan and most D-shaped in section. The semi-cylindrical wings (length of wing at either side of head: 5.5mm) are undecorated with the iron axis bar visible at either side. Roman bow brooch with some blue and orange enamel remaining. A derivative of a Wirral/ trumpet type bow brooch. This is an unusual variation and has some nice detail remaining. The bow is very pronounced and the body of the brooch is quite short. The main body of the brooch is complete although it has broken before the foot.
