Object type: HOOKED TAG
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Fragment of a flimsy thin sheet copper alloy probable Saxon hooked tag. Probably originally a sub-triangular body shape (Read class A) but now with the shoulders eroded through damage, possibly around attachment holes. A hole in the centre of the body remains complete, surrounding which, concentric ringed decoration can be seen. The body tapers sharply towards the bottom end to such an extent that the hooked end has disintegrated, and is no longer extant. See Read, B, Hooks Clasps and Eyes (2008) p.7-37 for similar examples. Circa 7th-10th century.

Cast copper alloy brooch foot dating from the early medieval period, that is c. AD700-900. Only the foot and part of the catchplate survive. The bow, head and pin are missing. The brooch is very worn, but there does not seem to be any surface decoration or mouldings. The foot plate is oval and what remains of the bow is hollow. It may possibly be the foot of an Ansate brooch (pers. comm. Helen Geake).
