The broken tip from a large flint 'long blade' implement. The flint is pale grey-blue in colour. The artefact has been provisionally dated to the final upper palaeolithic period (40,000 - 8,300 BC) although based on the tip of the blade alone this cannot be confirmed. The artefact measures 33.84mm long by 17.62mm wide, is 3.55mm thick and weighs 2.16g.

Palaeolithic Acheulian cordate hand axe knapped from blue-grey flint. The axe was shaped with covering removals knapped from the surface. The surface of the axe is heavily patinated and is a cream-orange colour. There is damaged on the dorsal surface. Acheulian had axes usually date from the lower Palaeolithic, but occasionally can be of a middle Palaeolithic date. The axe is 94mm long.

A flint Acheulian handaxe of sub-cordate form dating to the Lower-Middle Palaeolithic (c. 400,000 - c. 180,000 BC). The flint is blue-grey in colour with staining of a buff-cream hue. Removals cover the axe, particularly along the edges. These have been worn smooth by water action (see findspot land use). On one surface the axe has been subjected to fewer removals ensuring a more convex shape presumably to aid holding.

An almost complete “sub-cordate” flint handaxe of Palaeolithic date 500,000 BC – 40,000 BC). Length 148.5mm, width 79.2mm and 37.1mm thick. Weight 386.0g. Bi-facially worked and symmetrical in plan, the implement has a pointed tip and a rounded butt. The extreme point of the tip is missing due to an old break. The flake removals cover the whole of both faces. It is slightly "rolled", although this is hardly noticeable and the patination colour on both faces is generally off-white. This implement falls into Wymer's sub-cordate category: Type G (Wymer 1999, 10-11). This imp…

A possible Lower or Middle Palaeolithic flint hand axe. The axe is ovate in plan and in cross-section, and made from a mottled yellow-light brown flint. The ventral surface is very irregular and damaged. There some signs of flake scars, on the other side, but this axe - if it is anthropogenic at all - is in a bad state. Published in Lithics Vol. 26, p. 97 and fig. 8.

Palaeolithic flint hand axe, 61mm long, 48mm wide and 18mm thick. The axe is in good condition and made from brown flint, with some re-cortication, and weighs 51.26 grams. The axe is bi-facially worked and has a plano-convex cross section. It has a scraper edge, a damaged cutting edge and a curved chopping edge. Dr Kevin Leahy writes: this object appears to be a Middle Palaeolithic 'bout coupe'' handaxe and is therefore of some interest.

The butt end of an ovate or pointed hand-axe of Lower Palaeolithic date. The flint is dark grey in colour and has deep medium brown coloured staining on the surfaces and on the breaks, suggesting that the breaks are ancient. It has fine, shallow bifacial flaking on all surfaces leaving just three small areas of cortex visible. There is little evidence of rolling and no evidence of ploughmarks suggesting recent disturbance. The axe measures 96.31mm in length, 79.55mm in width, 30.35mm in thickness, and weighs 221.86g. This fragment is of Lower Palaeolithic date from between c.700,000 an…

Knapped flint handaxe. Probably Acheulian (mode 2) dating to the lower palaeolithic. Length: 119mm, width: 75mm; thickness: 42mm; mass: 294g. Bifacially worked with a tapering, pointed tip. The butt is angled at about 45 degrees when the handaxes is viewed in profile, with a large negative flake scar visible. The flint is heavily patinated (including the butt), and off white/light grey in colour. A less heavily patinated, grey coloured surface has been exposed near to the butt where there has been some more recent damage. The surface is approximately 10% cortex, mostly on one side.

Large Acheulian hand axe. Dated to the Lower Paleolithic era (early stone age), approximately 500,000 to 250,000 BC. Triangular shape. The blunt end of the axe (the handling end) is 92mm wide and 32mm thick. It tapers down towards the tip, which is now missing. The axe is 120mm long from the edge to the break. The broken end is 39mm wide and 8mm thick. There is evidence of retouching along the edges, which are still relatively sharp, indicating a long period of use. Achelian handaxes are fashioned out of large stone pebbles, using antler as a tool to skillfully knapp away flakes until…

An Upper Paleolithic blade, 119mm in length. This is a thick, high-backed blade with an abrupt end, which suggests that it may come from a two platform core. The striking platform is heavily abraded. In profile the blade is curved. The whole is patinated a chalky buff, with iron staining on the ventral face. There is some ventral edge damage or post-patination retouch on the left edge. It is likely to be very late in date, from around 28,000-9,000 BC.

An incomplete Acheulian flint handaxe of the Lower Palaeolithic period (c. 480,000 BP-c. 130,000 BP). The implement is sub-oval in plan and the tip is missing, apparently as a result of gellifraction. Some material has been lost on one face near the butt end. It also has a number of hair-line fractures. It has been knapped overall and the butt is evenly rounded in plan. There is an off-centre sub-circular perforation which is a natural feature formed by the crystallisation around a former fossil sponge. On one face there is a small circular void that was also formerly occupied by a …

A Lower Palaeolithic flint lithic implement: biface dating 500,000 - 40,000BC. This tool has a pointed oval shape with an angular notch in one side. The notch is a result of thermal fracture but the knapper has worked around this in the process of creating the biface. The tool has no cortex remaining and flake removal scars cover both surfaces.
