Record ID: NMS-F4C6F2
Object type: BLADE
Broad period: PALAEOLITHIC
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Tertiary soft hammer struck blade, of triangular section: - of pale, whiteish patinated mottled grey flint with spots of iron staining to both faces. Both ends are missing, both breaks are ancient transverse bending fractures, this has truncated the blade at 90 degrees, this may have happened at the point of striking the blade off the core. Both lateral edges are finely and irregularly damaged, perhaps by use wear. Probably Late (Final) Upper Palaeolithic, 12,000 to 10,000 BC.

Tertiary soft hammer struck blade, though quite thick, of trapezoidal section: - of pale, whiteish patinated mottled grey flint with spots of iron staining to both faces. Both ends are missing, both breaks are ancient transverse bending fractures, this has truncated the blade at 90 degrees, this may have happened at the point of striking the blade off the core. County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Tertiary soft hammer struck blade, of sub-trapezoidal section: - of pale, whiteish patinated mottled grey flint with two small spots of iron staining to the dorsal face. The distal end is missing, an ancient transverse bending fracture has truncated the blade at 90 degrees, this may have happened at the point of striking the blade off the core. The platform is abraded but not facetted. Probably Late (Final) Upper Palaeolithic, 12,000 to 10,000 BC.

Secondary soft hammer struck blade, of unpatinated mottled grey flint, a small patch of thin cortex remains to the extreme distal end next to a possible, yet tiny burin removal at the tip. The platform is not facetted or abraded. Probably Late (Final) Upper Palaeolithic, 12,000 to 10,000 BC.

Broad period: PALAEOLITHIC
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Secondary blade, ?semi-soft hammer struck from a single platform core, difficult to tell as the platform is crushed in antiquity but the bulb is without a scar, the blade is of sub-triangular section with a small patch of thin, weathered cortex extant to the (now) distal end; the blade is recently broken transversely with a long recent break along most of the length of one lateral edge, this shows the original colour of the flint to have been dark grey, grading to black. The other surfaces are now patinated white with the coarse inclusions mid-grey, the central area is striped/banded …

Object type: BACKED BLADE
Broad period: PALAEOLITHIC
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Tertiary blade, soft hammer struck from a single platform core, of pale brown flint now patinated light grey with slight rusty iron scrapes to the dorsal face, of thin triangular section, the area directly below the platform on the dorsal face has been trimmed before this blade was struck from the core. One lateral edge has been “backed”, steeply retouched along its length from the ventral face, the flakes removed to the dorsal edge, forming a gently convex, blunt edge, the opposing lateral edge is left sharp and represents the primary cutting edge, though it is recently damaged s…

Blade, of brown patinated slightly mottled flint, semi-soft hammer struck from a single platform core, the (unabraded and facet-less) platform has the distinct “lip” at the point of initiation of the strike to remove this blade, an indicator of soft hammer reduction, the bulb itself has a bulbal scar, indicating a slightly harder material than antler was used as a hammer. The distal end is thinly cortical and notched to one side, this may be damage as it cuts through an area of slight grey patination and does not follow the same colour of this, all lateral edges are without…

Broad period: PALAEOLITHIC
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Probable crested blade from the beginnings of a long blade core, of pale patinated mottled grey flint with extensive iron scrapes and spots from contact with agricultural implements, a prominent ridge has been formed by direct percussion to elongate the first blade removal from the core, the blade is quite thick, probably semi-hard hammer struck (uncertain, as the bulb of percussion is missing, an ancient transverse break just below where the bulb would be, this break was probably at the point of striking this blade from the core (a common error in making blades) to create two flake s…

A retouched flint flake of probable lower Paleolithic date, 80mm in length and struck from a mottled brown flint with fossil inclusions. The distal end demonstrates irregular removals which likely comprise retouch for use as a tool. The ventral surface has a clear bulb of percussion.

A Middle Palaeolithic Coygan ('Bout Coupe') handaxe. Cream/beige flint or chert. Sub-rectangular with a straight base, and narrows to a rounded tip (now incomplete). All edges have shattered damage. One face has a flat profile formed by three horizontal removal scars, the left-most with a further removal flake at 45 degrees to the edge. The other face has a raised profile with invasive, stepped or scaled, low angle retouch. An area of cortex remains at the base. Palaeolithic handaxes are common finds from Hampshire, but more typically of Lower Palaeolithic date and from the sout…

A Lower Palaeolithic sub-cordate handaxe. Bifacially worked with areas of cortex remaining on both surfaces. The 'ventral' face has invasive removal scars to the right and left of the pointed apex, and natural fracture lines at the butt. The 'dorsal' has invasive stepped removals along both sides, and a large natural fracture with loss of surface area at the butt, corresponding to the fracture line on the other face. Water worn. Orange/beige chert with small patches of recortication.
