Orange flint with brown shiny patches, possible debitage, as kindly identified by the finder, probably with large flakes removed overall by multangular hard hammer working. The finder notes this as a rare appearance of a distinctive orange-brown flint or chert, a material only hitherto recognised as the material selected to make the largest scraper to be reported from the vicinity. An early date is speculatively advanced. Suggested date: possibly Late Palaeolithic, 40000-10000 BC Length: 46.6mm, Width: 48.4mm, Thickness: 12mm, Weight: 20.89gms

Orange iron-stained flint debitage. A short triangular section flake with two broad flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a flat ventral surface. The iron staining suggests the object has been incorporated into gravels; the finder kindly suggests an early date may be evidenced by the surface condition. Suggested date: Late Palaeolithic, 40000-10000 BC. Length: 35.5mm, Width: 20.1mm, Thickness: 8.1mm, Weight: 5.61gms

Patinated cream-coloured flint with iron staining, debitage. A flake with broad parallel flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a bulb at the narrower end of its ventral surface. The surface colouration arises from rolling in gravels. An early date is suggested by the finder, comparing this surface with that of the many other dateable objects from the vicinity. Suggested date: Late Palaeolithic, 40,000-10,000 BC Length: 41.6mm, Width: 32.2mm, Thickness: 7.8mm, Weight: 11.17gms

A large irregular flint secondary waste flake, possibly of early-middle Palaeolithic date c.250 000 BC to 150 000BC. Description: The flake is roughly sub-triangular, with heavy conchoidal rippling. it terminates at one end in a hinge fracture. Some cortex remains on the dorsal face. The flint is mottled grey-blue and white, there is substantial iron staining. Measurements: 68.95mm, 56.18mm, 21.96mm thick and 87.43g in weight. Discussion: This flint has no clear retouchand in some ways resembles a large crude thinning removal from a paleolithic handaxe but a bit to thick.

A complete flint flake of lower Paleolithic date. Jason Gibbons (Norfolk Historic Environment Service, pers. com.) writes: 'Hard hammer struck flake found in situ at Happisburgh site 1, partially imbedded in laminated silts with only the platform and bulb protruding. The flint is glossy black and in exceptionally fresh condition with edges still sharp, the platform retains a small amount of thin, weathered cortex to one side, the other side has two flake scars and the blow to remove this flake from the core falls on the larger of the two, essentially the platform has had the cortex re…

A large flint blade flake or blade. A tertiary flake of heavily patinated and worn pale grey flint. The patina is matt and yellow-white. An elongate flake with a trapeziodal cross section. A wide striking platform at the proximal end and possibly broken distally. There is a wide bulb of percussion with radiating hackles at on the ventral face of the proximal end and widely space waves of percussion along the length. On the dorsal face are three main parallel flake removals and a smaller flake removal at the top. The patination is not typical of the usual calcareous Dorset soils. The e…

Toffee coloured flint with cortex possible debitage, as kindly identified by the finder. A large irregular flake with a broad flake removal scar on its dorsal side and an angled striking platform adjacent to a bulbar ventral surface. The opposite, straight, end may be trimmed by short abrupt retouch executed from the ventral aspect. The surface is weathered and battered. This reporter would welcome better-informed comment than his own on this object. An incomplete probable Levallois waste flake c.250,000BC - 40,000BC. Description: The flake roughly cordate in shape with a pointed end, rounded striking platform proximal end. it has convex edges and little to no retouch. The bulb of percussion is fairly substantial although the conchoidal rippling still visible is minimal. The fleet is heavily patinated a light brown/caramel colour. The pointed end is missing a section as it has broken away. Measurements: 155.52mm long, 60.8mm wide, 33.28mm thick and 480g in weight. Discussion: This flake has been produced by the Levallois …

Twelve flint scrapers probably from the Paleolithic dating to c 450,000-420,000 BC. Cortex is visible on some of the pieces and evidence of recortexing on one of the pieces. There is evidence of a bulb of percussion and concoidal rings on the ventral surfaces of all the pieces. The patina of the cortex is yellowish cream cortex with black flecks. The inner core of 9 of the flakes is light khaki brown with inclusions of white and dark brown marks. The other three flakes have a darker greyish brown core. The heaviest piece weighs 17.51g and measures 34.33mm in length, 27.75mm in width a…

Flint debitage. A large curved flake with broad and narrow parallel flakes struck from its dorsal side, and with a concave ventral surface. The surface bears dense buff-to-cream coloured patina overall, suggesting it has endured prolonged exposure to a calcareous environment. The ventral surface bears metallic scratches. The finder reports the object was incorporated in the gravel base of an excavated Iron Age or Romano-British ditch, and he infers that the scratches are from the trowel cleaning of the ditch bottom. His own researches suggest the object form may be of Middle Palaeolit…

Grey flint with cortex debitage. An irregular small chunk with broad flakes of cortex and a longer narrower flake trimmed by hard hammer from the dorsal side and with a rippled ventral surface. A dense creamy patina has developed over all struck surfaces, suggesting prolonged period of exposure to a calcareous environment; this is glossed, perhaps by wind-blown sand - 'desert gloss' - occurring in a periglacial environment. The patina has been removed by more recent and probably random impacts. Suggested date: Upper Palaeolithic, 40,000-10,000 BC Length: 48.9mm, Width: 29.6mm, Thic…

A large and complete Palaeolithic flint waste flake (500000 BC-10001 BC). This flake is sub-triangular in plan. It has a small portion of striking platform with a percussion scar. Ripples indicate the position of the striking platform. The undulating dorsal surface is completely covered with light brown cortex. The ventral surface is slightly convex, light orange and grey. Modern damage around the edges is probably due to it having been in the inter-tidal zone. Length: 117.5mm; width: 112.0mm; thickness: 32.6mm. Weight: c. 388.0g.

A probable Palaeolithic (500,000 to 24,000 BC) implement: possibly a crude handaxe. The implement is knapped from a chert like flint and where it is not damaged, the surface is heavily patinated, and is a mottled bright brown-orange due to iron staining. The damage reveals a light beige, matte surface. The implements' overall original shape is difficult to determine due to more recent damage on both faces at the edge, but it is now a sub-oval, and is a sub-lozenge in the horizontal section. One face has a patch of unworked surface which looks abraded and is the original surface. Th…

A patinated flint flake of possible Upper Palaeolithic date. It retains some cortex at the proximal end, with limited flake removal on the dorsal face and limited crude edge retouch. The entire object measures 54.58mm in length, 38.18mm in width, 6.07mm in thickness and 11.10g in weight. This flake is of possible Upper Palaeolithic date, c.40,000-10,000 BC, although a slightly earlier or later date range cannot be ruled out entirely.

Toffee coloured clouded and opaque flint. Knife. Narrow rod shaped blade. Four very long parallel flake removal scars on the dorsal aspect confer an angular plano-convex profile; very faint rippling on the ventral side shows where the flake was detached from a core. Some slight abrasions along the edge have been smoothed. Though the object has a glossy surface overall, possibly a result of curation in antiquity, the context could equally suggest this appealing finish to be the result of wave action. Kevin Leahy kindly comments as follows: 'An interesting object. Without retouch t…
