A complete, struck / knapped quartzite pointed biface handaxe of Lower and / or Middle Palaeolithic dating (c. 800, 000 BC to c. 250,000 BC). The biface has good evidence of working on both interior (upper) and exterior (lower) faces, making it a biface handaxe (Graf, A., 2004, 84). Approximately 75% of the total surface has been worked, with the original surface or cortex covering the remaining 25% of the surface. The interior face has been fully worked. The biface has an ovoid shape with a slight tapering towards the tip, with a rounded thick profile which thins at the tip. Th…

A complete quartzite Chopper core edge of the Palaeolithic period, c. BC 800,000 - c. BC 40,000. The quartzite edge has been struck from a pebble core. It has been worked unifacially (one side). Approximately 70% of the pebble has been worked. One large flake has been removed, and natural breaks have been made use of, to create the main shape, with a few smaller flakes removed from the right hand side to create an edge. By using the natural break it has created a bifacial effect with only unifacial working. It measures 102.5 mm in length, 80.9 mm wide and 39.31 mm thick. It weig…

A complete struck / worked quartzite handaxe probably dating from the early Lower Paleolithic period to the late Middle Paleolithic, circa 400,000 - 50,000 BC. Bi-facial handaxe as struck removals present on both sides. In plan, the handaxe is sub-triangular with straight long sides leading to a point. The handaxe is irregular in profile and section. The handaxe is thin with little surviving core perhaps indicating that this is a flake which has been retouched. The quartzite is a dark brown / grey colour with no visible inclusions or faults. All of the surfaces are lustrous. The handa…

A complete struck / worked quartzite handaxe, probably dating from the early Lower Paleolithic period to the late Middle Paleolithic, circa 400,000 - 50,000 BC. Identified as a uni-face handaxe as struck removals are only discernible on one side. However, the maker took advantage of naturally occurring breaks on the other side of the handaxe. In plan, the base of the handaxe is sub square with rounded corners with sides gradually tapering to a rounded point. In profile, the handaxe is sub-triangular. The original cobble was probably long and narrow. The quartzite is light brown in …
