A Prehistoric flint scraper. This is a secondary flake with approximately 10% of the cortex remaining on the dorsal surface and approximately 1% on the ventral surface. There are several flake removal scars on the dorsal surface but some of these will be due to later damage. The flake is roughly triangular in plan with the butt forming a point and the proximal end forming a wide edge. There is some retouch along the proximal edge. There may also be some working around the left proximal corner creating a point which could work as a borer or awl. The flint is dark grey and glossy.…

A small tertiary flint flake, undiagnostic, and so given a general prehistoric date. It is of a grey brown colour, with some patinisation resulting in a lighter grey patch on both faces, and a darker surround on the dorsal face. There is some edge damage which is estimated to have occured in antiquity, but the flake is in otherwise good condition.

2 bone beads of probable prehistoric date. The beads are rather rudimentary; though well polished, they are undecorated, subcylindrical, and asymmetrical in form. It is difficult to determine the skeletal element from which they were made; the subcylindrical form could be manufactured from the phalanges of a large mammal, the longbones (e.g. metapodials) of a smaller mammal, or the tines of a deer antler. However, the disorganised microstructure of the objects, together with the presence of secondary osteones (visible under low powered microscopy) shows that postcranial bone was used…

Edge damaged flint flake from the the prehistoric period. It is roughly triangular in section and in plan. It is made from a grey flint. The dorsal face has a central ridge which is broken where the flint is notched. The ventral face is smooth although slight cnchoidal ripples can be seen. One long side of the flint has been broken and chipped, probably when it has been in the ground. This is likely to be a bi-polar flake which would explain the different fracture lines.

The high heat has resulted in cracking throughout the flint leaving the artefacts with a marble looking surface. It has also left these flints vulnerable to the elements and has meant that many of these have been truncated buy frost damage. These artefacts date from the Palaeolithic through to the Late Iron Age.
