Prehistoric antler from either a large Cervus species, or an Elk (Alces alces). The antler's bud measures 65mm x 65mm, and does not appear large enough to be from an Irish elk (Megaloceros giganteus). The breaks on the antler have occurred post deposition. There are no blade marks on the antler so it may have died of natural causes. There are few signs of abrasion so it is unlikely to have moved far from its original deposition site. Dates between 10,000 and 1,900 BC. There doesn't appear to have been any significant mineralisation of the organic material s…

Prehistoric antler from either a large Cervus species, or an Elk (Alces alces). The antler's bud measures 75mm x 62mm, and does not appear large enough to be from an Irish elk (Megaloceros giganteus). The breaks on the antler have occurred post deposition. Dates between 10,000 and 1,900 BC, probably from the earlier Mesololithic as the antler is partially mineralised. Length 378mm, width 331mm, thickness 62mm, and weighs approximately 8000g.

An incomplete Bronze Age red deer (Cervus elaphus) antler Base Axe mattock dating from 3000 - 1000 BC. This is a Smith Type B mattock. The object consists of the lower beam and basal junction of a red deer antler. The brow tine and bez tine have both been removed, at the distal end (the burr) remains. The mattock has a perforation with a diameter 26.59mm mediolaterally through the beam above the bez tine junction where the haft would have been inserted. At the proximal end the working edge is missing. AMS radiocarbon dating of similar Base Axe mattocks by (Tolan-Smith & Bonsall, …

A Bronze Age bone awl, probably dating to the period 2150 BC - 800 BC. One end of the bone retains the distal condyle while the other has been narrowed to create a pointed tip. The tip would have been used to pierce other materials. The front of the awl shows a lower recess created removing part of the bone which reveals a inner chamber. Just above the recess there is a decoration composed by three incided and trasversal lines. Part of the decoration is not visible due to an old circular break of the bone. Both sides of the recess is a small groove. The reverse part is smooth with …

Fragments of upper and lower mandible of a cow and seven teeth. The portion of the cattle's palatte has split in two down a natural bone fissure and the lower mandible is only a fragment. The teeth are in good condition but not attached to the skull fragments, they were found in association with. The bone has been recorded as it is from an area rich in prehistoric activity and has the potential to be associated with it. All of the teeth are molars with well preserved root structure.

A Neolithic - Bronze Age (4,000 - 1,200BC) antler pick. This pick has been constructed from the tip of an antler tine. There is a cut surface across the butt and there is a triangular chip missing; this is probably post depositional damage. A hole has been drilled near the butt to accommodate the haft. The hole has cylindrical sides. There are very distinctive cut marks which indicate a flint tool was used to cut the tine and work on the hole. There is some wear and polishing around the hole which is related to the movement of the haft. The polishing around the tip would part…

A possible wrist guard or bracer made from bone. In plan it is rectangular and in section it is a slight crescent. One terminal has three circular holes in a row measuring 3.9mm diameter. This terminal has slightly rounded corners and the edge is slightly bevelled on the upper surface and straight and flat on the edge. The opposite terminal is a cut edge, which has a cut mark alongside it. The surface of the guard has a well developed shiny patina. It measures 44.86mm long, 21.09mm wide, 4.77mm thick and weighs 5.6g. The identification of a wrist guard or bracer is very tentative for …

A worked antler of possible Bronze Age date. The tip of one antler tine survives, terminating in old breaks at one end and missing the very end of the tine due to old breaks. Towards the tip of the antler the surfaces have been worn smooth appearing almost polished in places, and demonstrating extensive tool marks and signs of use wear. Precisely what this object was originally used for remains uncertain, however the findspot is suggestive of prehistoric rather than later usage, possibly during the Bronze Age. It measures 171mm in length, 25.31mm in width, 31.96mm in depth/thickness, …

The upper part of a human skull in very good condition and stained dark brown. The fragment is almost certainly of prehistoric date. Emily Brants reports: The remains consist of the frontal bone from the skull of an adult male human. The age of the individual cannot be attributed any more accurately, due to the lack of aging indicators (e.g. teeth or corresponding skull bones with sutures etc). The skull is probably male, due to the prominent supraorbital ridge and the blunt angle of the superior margin of the orbits. The bone has the appearance of beginning to fossilise, as it has lo…

Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Greater London Authority
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A Prehistoric, probably Neolithic – Iron Age bone point (3500BC – 100AD). This point has been made from a metatarsal (hind foot) possibly from a cervid. The bone’s morphology has been used to give this point its triangular fluted cross-section. The bone was shaped using a flint tool leaving characteristic striations. It has snapped at an angle across the shaft. Alan Pipe suggests that it snapped during use rather than post deposition. Dimensions: length: 159.83mm; width: 11.65mm; thickness: 11.05mm; weight: 19.76g.

A Neolithic or Bronze Age macehead, carved from the basal area of a red deer (Cervus elaphus) antler. The porous core of the antler has been removed, so as to form a hollow cylinder that could easily be hafted to a handle. A large transverse hole (diameter 24.9mm)has been bored through the antler beam, so that it crosses the hollowed out core, and emerges through the cortex on the other face. This perforation is almost perfectly circular, and must have been done with a purpose-made tool. Notably, the edges of the perforation are smooth, relatively sharp, and show no evidence of wea…
