An incomplete lead weight of uncertain date. The weight is broadly oval in plan with an irregular tapering circular section. A circular perforation of approximately 15.4mm depth and 5.7mm diameter is present to the wider end. The weight is undecorated. The metal has a worn and pitted patina. The weight is 40.3mm long, 33.8mm in diameter, and weighs 240g. Classic roman steelyards are bi-connical with iron or copper-alloy suspension loops, often with a loop on the top and bottom. A cut garnet oval intaglio, of Hellenistic origin. The incised design depicts a female figure, leaning on a column with her left elbow. The subject is Aphrodite, who seems to be either robing or disrobing herself. The intaglio is 13.5mm long and 7.7mm wide, and is flat and undecorated on the reverse. The style, subject and shape show it is Hellenistic and probably dates from the 3rd or 2nd century BC. This object was originally erroneously recorded as Roman and depicting Securitas. Database user Ittai Gradel kindly submitted an error report pointing out the mistake, and also provid…

Roman coin, obol, Alexandria mint (AD71-72), Vespasian (AD69-79). Ref: Dattari #379. Alexandrian coins have been found in hoards and as site-finds in Britain, but they are rare. As they did not fit into the standard "Augustan" monetary system adopted in the rest of the Roman Empire, they rarely left Egypt. However, the appearance of this coin does suggest that it was not lost in Britain in antiquity. Although poorly preserved, the identification of this coin can be made with some confidence.
