An incomplete stone object, a probable whetstone or hone stone of unknown date. The object is formed from a finely grained light brown stone with a few micaceous inclusions. It is rectangular, smooth, with rounded edges, as if manufactured, but has breaks at both ends, one at an angle to the whole block, the other a more or less straight break. A complete whetstone or honestone of unknown date. Description: The object made from dark grey stone. It is sub-rectangular in plan and sub-triangular and in profile. One side is flat and the other side curves down to the thin end from about half way along the length. The butt has a V-shaped slot. An elongated whetstone, of sub-square section with both ends either broken or left unworked from the natural piece of slightly banded schist stone this was ground from, all four sides appear to have been used to sharpen knives, sickles etc. and are quite smooth to the touch. A complete whetstone of uncertain date. The object is oval and made of a dark brown / red stone, rich in mica, posibly a local sandstone. The surface is marked with distinctive lines, indicative of its use as a whetstone. One face is roughly flat and is inscribed with a triangle the covers the whole width of the stone. A possible whetstone of uncertain date. The object is triangular in plan, with a broken point. Composed of a dense, dark grey sedimentary stone, all surfaces and edges are smooth. One surface is very flat, and has straight linear scratches and lines suggestive of use sharpening metal edges. A fragment of a probable pendant whetstone of uncertain date. A fine grained dark stone, roughly rectangular in plan, with a hole for suspension from a cord or thong drilled at one end. The stone was probably considerably longer, it now terminates in a clean break 26 mm along from the suspension hole. One surface is very smooth and has a curve; thinning towards the break. A whetstone of uncertain date. The object is rectangular in plan and square in section. There are two grooves running down the centre of two opposing sides. The stone is a mid-light grey and slightly irregularly shaped due to wear. Whetstones are incredibly difficult to date and were used throughout history to sharpen metal tools, coming in a variety of different shapes and sizes. An incomplete possible whetstone of uncertain date. The stone is lentoid in profile and circular in section constructed from fine grained sandstone with a high mica component. Each end of the object has broken away. A deep linear groove measuring 5.16mm in width runs transverse across the centre of one face, possibly caused by sharpening tools. One flat face is smooth, the other less so and with a substantial V-sectioned groove running from edge to edge, set slightly off-centre and deepest at mid-point. A semi-circular piece of fine grained soft red sandstone that has been ground flat on one side and on one face which are at right angles to each other. There are striations on both flat surfaces. It is 56.1mm long, 19.4mm wide, and 14.4mm thick. It weighs 22.11gm. The stone is very soft so may have been used as a polishing stone rather than a hone. It may also be natural, though the straight edges look to be man made. This sort of object is almost impossible to date.
