An incomplete stone object, a probable whetstone or hone stone of unknown date. The object is formed from a finely grained light brown stone with a few micaceous inclusions. It is rectangular, smooth, with rounded edges, as if manufactured, but has breaks at both ends, one at an angle to the whole block, the other a more or less straight break. It has clearly been used to sharpen different blades or other sharp objects. There is a deep, but narrow, longitudinal scar at one end of a long broad surface, suggesting repeated use to sharpen there, and a se…

An elongated whetstone, of sub-square section with both ends either broken or left unworked from the natural piece of slightly banded schist stone this was ground from, all four sides appear to have been used to sharpen knives, sickles etc. and are quite smooth to the touch. There are rusty iron scrapes to the surfaces from contact with agricultural machinery and recent surface losses in places, now showing a lighter colour to the original surfaces.    The age of this is whetstone is difficult to establish, schist has been used at least since the Early Saxon period, most not…

A fragment of a probable pendant whetstone of uncertain date. A fine grained dark stone, roughly rectangular in plan, with a hole for suspension from a cord or thong drilled at one end. The stone was probably considerably longer, it now terminates in a clean break 26 mm along from the suspension hole. One surface is very smooth and has a curve; thinning towards the break. This was probably due to the whetstone being in use for some time and may have contributed to the break. Wear around the hole also suggests prolonged use. The object is 21.5 mm wide, 37 mm long, 8.9 mm thick ta…

An incomplete possible whetstone of uncertain date. The stone is lentoid in profile and circular in section constructed from fine grained sandstone with a high mica component. Each end of the object has broken away. A deep linear groove measuring 5.16mm in width runs transverse across the centre of one face, possibly caused by sharpening tools. This form of whetstone is fairly ubiquitous throughout history. It is difficult to say that this is definitely a whetstone as natural stones could be used for this purpose without much working to make them suitable. Whetstones are known to h…

A large piece of sandstone which has been utilised as a whetstone at an unknown date, but likely to be medieval or Post Medieval. The stone is a natural pieces of sandstone which is in danger of fracturing into two pieces, so is supported by cable ties. It is rectangular in plan and sub-square in section. One end of one face (the top view in the image) has been used for grinding or sharpening which has smoothed the stone and caused a distinct groove. The rest of the stone has not been used in this way. The shape of the stone suggests it was used as a whetstone, but it is also possible…

A semi-circular piece of fine grained soft red sandstone that has been ground flat on one side and on one face which are at right angles to each other. There are striations on both flat surfaces. It is 56.1mm long, 19.4mm wide, and 14.4mm thick. It weighs 22.11gm. The stone is very soft so may have been used as a polishing stone rather than a hone. It may also be natural, though the straight edges look to be man made. This sort of object is almost impossible to date.
