A probable pin head of uncertain date, possibly medieval (c. AD 1350-1400) Cast copper-alloy biconical faceted head with four triangular sides on the upper and lower half. Each face carries an amorphous design of ridges and stamps. Shaft is missing. Length: 8.70 mm; Width: 9.35 mm; Weight: 0.86g A similar copper-alloy pin with biconical faceted head is illustrated in Egan and Pritchard (2001, 300; no. 1476), though this is pentagonal rather than lozenge shaped. Egan and Pritchard (2001, 302) date the period of use specifically of pins with pentagonal heads to Lon…

A complete copper alloy pin, of uncertain, possibly Post Medieval date. The find has a pierced spherical head, decorated with a raised circular collar of multiple grooves above and a knop at the top. A copper alloy loop, now sub-circular due to being bent, is threaded through the pierced hole. Below the piercing is a raised collar of multiple grooves. Below this the top of the pin flares out slightly as though acting as a cover to the pin shaft. The pin shaft is sub square in section and bend slightly towards the distal end. There is a tiny perforation hole 1.8mm below the pin head bu…

An incomplete copper alloy Roman pin. The head is biconical in shape, its outer face divided bo two concentric circular grooves with a small knop projecting from the centre. The sections of metal between these rings is decorated at regular intervals with small incised transverse notches. The stem is circular in cross-section and tapers towards the lower end. The tip is missing and there is a slight bend just above this break. The metal survives in good condition with a bright green patina. The absence of a collar below the head suggests that this is of Roman rather than early med…

Copper alloy pin of uncertain date, with possible zoomorphic terminal The cast pin is near-complete but is heavily-corroded (with an overall length of 43.5mm and a weight of 3.4g). The terminal is asymmetric and of undulating form, possibly representing stylised opposing birds (with a width of 19.6mm and a thickness of 3.7mm). There is a slight protrusion at the centre of the apex and may be a damaged stub. Beneath the protrusion is a circular perforation through the pin head (of 2.8mm diameter) and retaining the remnants of a fixing, possibly the link from a chain. The head narrows…

An incomplete copper alloy gilded pin of an uncertain date. A broadly similar parallel can be found in Egan and Pritchard (1991) "Dress Accessories" page 300 No,1476 which suggests a medieval date is possible. Overall, the pin is badly corroded, but the head of the pin can be surely identified as a pentagonal head with five points, four of which form the sides of the shape, and the fifth located at the top of the head. From each of the four side points are fine ridges which follow upwards, towards the central point at the top of the shape. Where the head of the pin has been fixed …
