Ground and polished stone spindle whorl of probable late Prehistoric- later medieval date (-2000 BC – 1500 AD). The spindle whorl is sub-circular in plan, its diameter measures 38mm and is 11.5mm thick. There is a circular drilled hole through the whorl and this is set slightly off centre: it is also egg-timer shaped caused by drilling from both faces. The diameter of the hole measures 7.9mm. The whorl weighs 22.3 grams. The whorl is undecorated and the edges are worn. The whorl is made from course sandstone which has been shaped so that it is lentoid in cross section. The sandst…

Possible Hone Stone. A rectangular piece of pale grey stone, which appears to have been worked into a honestone. However, the rock seems to be too soft to sharpen metal implements, and the object may have served another purpose.

Object type: WEIGHT
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Leeds
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Possible fishing weight, shaped from sedimentary rock. The weight is roughly rectangular shaped at the base and tapers slightly towards the top where there is the remains of what may be a circular suspension loop. The loop has broken away at the top, probably as a result of the stone being fairly soft and porous(it is a type of sandstone). The weight is 106.4g in mass and measures 67.4mm in length, 50.8mm in width and 27.4mm in thickness.

Fragment of a shaped stone object, made from a flat piece of local red sandsone. The upper surface has been ground into a rimmed dish with straight sides. Two of the remaining sides angle away from a longer straight side giving the impression it may have originally been heptagonal. The underside of the dish curves up to the rim which has an acute edge. The original dimension of the dish was approximatley 350mm x 240mm. May possibly be a fragment of a garden bird bath.
