A cast lead alloy object of uncertain function and date. The object is comprised of two hollow cast sans serif letters R F, forming a square block. The edges are worn but the object appears complete. The letters are reversed, when viewed from the raised, convex side both R and F are facing backwards. The hole in the loop of the R perforates through the object. There is no substantial border but the edges are curved inwards, possibly the object formed a lid of some kind. The object has a dusty buff patina. Height 29 mm, width 28 mm, thickness 4 mm and weight 21 g.

A complete lead zoomorphic mount of uncertain date (possibly post-medieval to modern). The mount is cast in the shape of a stylised fish or dolphin, with clear attachment breaks under the head and the curve of the tail. The body of the fish is curved in an exaggerated S-shape, with the head (including lips and large eyes) at the start of a broad curve outwards and then down towards a smaller inwards curve at the tail. The fanned tail bends outwards again to connect to the body of the fish. Though worn, there is evidence of casting detail to imitate scales on the body, in additi…

A small, heavy, decorative fragment of copper alloy from an unidentified object, of unknown date. The surfaces are smooth, with an even, dark green patina. The slightly curved, thicker edge shows evidence of a break, the outer face rises from this break and has three small decorative motifs on it, before flattening off at right angles,to form a small, flat top/base area. The inner face has a curved channel running around it. The decorative motifs are not runic, but reminiscent of runic characters. Two of the symbols are fairly simplistic in design, one is of two parallel lines inci…

An incomplete copper alloy object of uncertain date and function. It has a sub-rectangular sectioned stem which terminates at both ends in a double-pronged projection which bears some resemblance to a nail-clearer, but which was more likely to be created by a break running across a hole such as a suspension loop. One terminal end is flattened and spatulate, and turned through ninety degrees to the stem. The stem bends through an arch, which seems to be a deliberate feature rather than due to damage. Overall length 40.8 mm, width 4 mm, thickness 3 mm. Weight 3.2 g

An object of uncertain date and function, possibly a weight. It is an irregular, roughly lozenge shaped piece of dark, non-ferrous metal, probably a copper alloy, All edges are chipped and irregular. It is broadly flat in profile, both surfaces are decorated with three raised concentric circles, the outer of which is double, the lines 1 mm apart. The innermost circle forms a cup with a depressed centre, 3.8 mm diameter. The overall diameter of the pattern is 12.6 mm. On one surface the pattern of circles is deformed, possibly by an impact. Incomplete bone implement of unknown age and function. The object consists of the lower limb bone of a mammal (perhaps a vestigial equid finger) which has been worked into a tapering point with a roughly triangular cross section. The wider end of the bone is smooth and worn, perhaps from usage as an awl. The tip is broken off. The bone implement is smooth and shiny in places, suggesting some age, but closer dating is difficult. It has darker areas of discolouration, probably through contact with the soil. The object measures 101.9mm in length and is 22.8mm at its maximum across the…

A lead object with a fragment of bone embedded into it. The bone has been identified as a cattle or horse rib by Dr Umberto Albarella, Reader in Zooarchaeology at the University of Sheffield. The lead encases the bone very closely, suggesting it was poured molten over the bone, which was already excarnated (de-fleshed), and apparently broken - the lead has flowed along the fracture at one end of the bone. There are impressions in the lead which may indicate other bone fragments, now missing. The other side of the lead is flat with regular edges and stepped 'lip', as if the lead has a…

The wider end is rounded but terminates witha projecting spike. The object has a brown patina but areas of the surface have worn away and the patina below is light green. A copper alloy object of uncertain date and function. Possibly a part of a handle of a cosmetic instrument. It is 55 mm long, 4.7mm wide and 2 mm thick at the mid point. It is rectangular in section but round at one end: it tapers slightly to a blunt point 2.5 mm diameter decorated with five incised circumferential grooves. A perforated stone object of uncertain date, probably used as a weight. It is circular in plan, with flattened surfaces top and bottom. Edges appear bevelled but it is not clear if this is intentional or the result of wear and damage. The surface has been worked smooth but there are multiple chips and breaks. The surface lacks the very smooth or polished appearance of so-called 'battle axes' or 'maces'. The stone appears to be sedimentary, possibly a fossiliferous limestone.
