A plaster cast of a decorated bone. Although the cast is modern, the original object from which the cast was taken has some similarities to Neolithic decorative objects. The object is 138.3mm long and 47.3mm in diameter. It is a very precise plaster cast of a cattle femur which was made in two pieces which have been glued together, allowing the detail from the inside of the hollow bone to be faithfully reproduced. A thin skim of fine plaster was then put over the top to hide the join. This outer layer has been decorated with incised lines. There are three bands of circumferential line…

Lead possible cable or wire fragment. A short tube comprising an outer skin of lead sheet of thickness 1.5mm with a loosely butted seam, but incorporating two tiny rounded conduits of diameter 2mm within. This might be apt to serve as an insulating jacket around two strands of an electric cable of conductive material. The metal retains a grey tint, though its shiny surface may arise from treatment by the finder. Suggested date: Modern, 1900-1950 Length: 20.6mm, Diameter: 10.3mm, Weight: 8.59gms

Copper alloy wire. Two strands of drawn copper alloy wire of diameter 2mm; on strand being wrapped tightly around the other, cut at one or both ends. This may simply be a sport involving two pieces of scrap, though the configuration might also be apt to a simple electrical function. The diameter of the wire appears to respect the metric system, it may therefore be of recent date. Suggested date: Modern, 1900-1950 Length: 41.6mm, Diameter (as found): 6.9mm, Weight: 6.45gms

Glass bottle fragment. A small fragment from the base of a wine or medicine bottle of blue-green glass [blue under reflected light but green in transmitted light], is here presented to illustrate the misleading result of multiple abrasions, which led the finder to initially consider this to be a prehistoric flint tool. The Australian Aboriginal custom of working up arrowheads from glass or china telegraph insulators could produce objects of this appearance; examples were displayed at North Lincolnshire Museum in recent times and are held by various museum collections. Such activity is…

An incomplete Modern tin-alloy whistle (c. 1800-c. 1900). It is sub-triangular in plan and is in the form of the rear part of a fish's body. The head of the fish, the mouth-piece, is missing. Originally it would have been hollow. However, it is now flattened and slightly misshapen. Both sides are scaled with a dorsal fin at the top and an anal fin at the bottom. The tail is in the form of a caudal fin. At the opposite end there is a plain border on both faces, 3.9mm in width. 31.7 x 17.1 x 4.2mm. Weight: 5.49g. A similar incomplete whistle has been recorded from Berkshire: SUR-BEBF41.
