Early-medieval or medieval undecorated lead spindle whorl. It is sub-conical: sub-circular and tapering slightly convexly in diameter from the flat base to the opening of the perforation on top, which is not level but oblique to the base. The perforation is circular or very slightly oval and of constant diameter. It opens approximately centrally at the base. Lead spindle whorls seem to have been in use from the 10th to 14th centuries.
Diameter (base) 19.5-21.2mm. (top) 9.9-10.3mm. Thickness: 15.5mm. Diameter of perforation: 6.6mm. Weight: 28.3g.

Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A fragment of a copper alloy perhaps buckle plate or strap end of uncertain date but perhaps dating to the Early Medieval or Medieval periods, c AD 900 - 1350. what remains is a sub rectangular sheet of metal with an old irregular break across its length and perhaps also down one side. There is a drilled hole, centrally, near the complete, narrow, end of the plate and part of an engraving of a stylised fish. A bend in the plate by the hole suggests the plate was held down very tightly at that point. The body of the fish is incomplete due to the breaks in the item but c…

Single terminal of an Early Anglo-Saxon equal-arm brooch, or a Middle to Late Anglo-Saxon ansate brooch. If it belongs to an ansate, it is of Weetch’s (2014) Type IV, since it is square and flat. A short stub projecting barely more than two millimetres from one edge and terminating in a worn break is all that remains of the bow. This is narrower than the terminal and rectangular in cross-section. A single D-shaped pin-lug projects from the reverse of the terminal, located centrally and close to the bow. Its circular perforation is visible but is currently filled with concreted ea…

Iron end-plate and integral arm from the bolt of a late early-medieval or medieval padlock. The end plate is sub-circular and the broadly flat arm projects from the top of it on a perpendicular plane. At the top of the arm is an integral tubular loop which would have received the (missing) bar of the padlock, thereby closing it.
The end plate exhibits three prominent stubs of the missing spines of the locking mechanism. These are rectangular in cross-section and the longest projects just four millimetres. One is at the bottom of the plate (six o-clock) and appears to be oriented…

An incomplete Early Medieval pin dating to circa AD 750-900. The pin has a faceted biconical head. A circular sectioned shank emerges from the bottom of the head and terminates in a fairly recent break. The shank contains a collar consisting of two circumferential grooves situated at the junction of the head and the shank.
The pin is consistent with Ross' Type LXVII.ii 'medium bi-conical headed sub type (Ross 1991: 281-282). Ross assigns these mid 8th to 9th century AD dates with Evans and Loveluck noting they were the most numerous form of Early Medieval pins from Flixborough

An incomplete probable Early Medieval harness pendant possibly dating to circa AD 550-650. It is flat with rounded edges. It has a crescentic terminal. The terminal narrows into a triangular shaft. Unidentified object of probably Early-Medieval or Medieval date. The object is cyclindrical, curved and tapers to one end. In the wider end there is a circular hole and the other end is broken. The shaft is decoration, perhaps zoomorphic in design (possibly a fish or dragon). The middle of the shaft is decorated with a raised crest with wavy lines on the top. On either side of this crest is an eye of a single ring and dot. The mouth is represented by two V-shaped ridges which look to be swallowing the wider end of the object.
