An incomplete whetstone of uncertain exact date (c. AD 43-1800). The whetstone is made from a fine-grained sandstone, is sub-rectangular in cross-section, tapering along its length towards one rounded end. One end is broken and the opposing end is heavily chipped.  The overall dimenions are as follows: 79.49mm in length, 45.07mm in width, 26.24mm in thickness and 162.10g in weight.

Fine-grained Sandstone possible whetstone fragment, as kindly identified by the finder. A fragment from the tapering end of a cobble whose sub-triangular section may initially have been defined by natural erosion by wind-blown sand or water. These smooth faces, however, appear to have been further smoothed by use as a sharpening stone, resulting in the formation of a shallow concavity or dishing on one of the sides. Roman to Modern cigar shaped whetstone. The finder's partner is a qualified geologist and says the sharpening stone is made from a "Fine to medium grained, quartz cemented sandstone, probably local millstone grit but its source location in the Bowland stratigraphic sequence is not known. A fragment of probable whetstone or hone of uncertain dating (from the Roman period onwards, c.AD 43 to 1800). It is cylindrical in shape with (broken) projections on two adjacent 'faces'; approximately one third of the cylinder shape is also missing. It measures 33.0mm in length, 34.6mm in diameter, 39.5mm in width, 34.5mm in thickness and weighs 48.86g. The stone is a fine grained sandstone with micaceous inclusions and a metallic black sheen to the outside edge.

One end of a rectangular sectioned whetstone and a non-joining end fragment which may or may not be from the same stone. The larger piece narrows and thins to a sharp point at the complete end. One end of a rectangular and rectangular secetioned whet stone with a drilled circular hole through the remaining complete end. Fine grained non-micaceous rock formed and broken along distinct layers with flat sides, slightly rounded corners and edges and a slightly concave face, probably from use. The fragment is 49.0mm long, 33.7mm wide and 9.8mm thick it weighs 32 grams. While not diagnositic on its own it was found in a group of Roman material and is likely to be of that date although there is some late 18th century material also on the field.

The whetstone has been manufactured from very fine-grained, blue-grey mudstone, similar to the Jurassic rocks found on the coast of North Yorkshire. It is sub-rectagular in plan and section. It is broken down its length from being struck and shearing down a natural bedding plane. The damage, however, shows the very fine internal structure of the stone.
