A possible lead vessel repair or pot mend of Roman to post-medieval date (about AD 43-1800).  The object could be a plug to mend a hole in a vessel wall. The object is composed of an outer sub-circular, concave plate, which tapers inwards to a pair of fixings of split pin type that would have passed through the hoel and then been flattened against the inside of the vessel. These fixings have been partially flattened. The mend has a mid grey patina. It has a diameter of 25.62mm; a thickness of 9.68mm and weighs 11.12g. If not a pot mend, the object could be pa…

A copper alloy unidentified object, of uncertain date, AD 43 - 1900. It is possibly a vessel handle escutcheon such as that from a hanging bowl or similar vessel. It is a triangular or worn heart shaped terminal at the end of a rectangular shaft, probably broken at the end. The shaft is curved in profile. The tip of the triangular terminal is a more recent break. The other edges are rounded, very worn and patinated. There is no evidence of attachment or fixings. The object is 31.2mm long, 18.7mm wide, 10.2mm thick and weighs 11.73g. The strongly curved nature of the rectangular p…

A cast lead vessel repair (pot mend) of uncertain Roman to Post-Medieval date c. AD 43-1800.  The mend is formed of two sub-oval shaped faces - one flat, the other slightly concave - connected by an internal shank, all cast in a single piece. The flat face is somewhat larger and more regularly shaped than the other. The two faces sit very close, and in places right up against each other, so the shank is represented by a slight groove around the edges of the flat sides only. On one side, this groove widens to accommodate a small triangle of pottery st…

A lead alloy probable vessel repair (pot-mend), dating from the Roman to the Post-Medieval period (AD 43- 1700).  The object consists of one large side from which projects a smaller oval of lead which has a creamy white patina. Between the two ovals some grey/brown ceramic material remains. The smaller side is slightly convex and was probably on the outerside of the pot.  Pot mends were used to repair broken vessels. and are found in both Roman and Medieval periods, but without the remains of the vessel it is impossible to date them more precisely.

Copper alloy vessel fragment. Cast triangular section flat-topped rim sherd from a shallow bowl, with sooting on the undersurface. The mass of accompanying material could point to a Roman date, though such vessels might appear rarely through the early medieval period in the form of Coptic bowls, or later as the more common medieval cauldron. The rim form however, does not resemble that of a medieval vessel and the form was probably both open and shallow. Suggested date: Unknown, Roman to Medieval, 43-1500 Width: 46.6mm, Height (in use): 12.9mm, Thickness (at rim): 10.4mm, Weight: 20.58gms
