Fragment of a Roman copper alloy steelyard balance arm, both ends broken in antiquity. The greater part is of sub-circular cross-section with four transverse engraved grooves on one face and three on the other. Just before one break there is a change in cross-section at which the object flattens out and expands into a circular fulcrum loop. In a standard Roman steelyard arm a second fulcrum loop would lie close by and project from the opposite edge (a third loop, for the load, would be at the missing terminal). For more complete examples see …

A lead and iron probable Roman steelyard weight, c.AD 43 - 410. This object is discoidal with a convex domed top and an offset central piercing. In the centre are the remains of an iron loop, of which only the iron inside the lead survives, visible at the base. There appears to be lightly incised decoration around the sides and across the base of the weight. The side decoration consist of a series of X crosses, while the base decoration is a narrowly-spaced grid. This decoration is not obvious to the eye, which makes it unlikely that this was a method of distinquishing this weight fro…

A complete copper alloy suspension hook from an unidentified object, potentially a steelyard, probably of Roman date (c. AD43-410). The hook is made from a single piece of wire bent and tapered flat at one end to form an 8mm long hook. Above the hook the wire has a sub-oval section 2.3mm wide and 1.8mm thick. The wire forms a suspension loop at the top of the object, thinning to c. 0.7mm thick to form a flanking loop on either side of the main loop connected by a chord c. 1.6mm wide. The second flanking loop curves inward then wraps with a left-hand twist repeatedly down and around t…
