Copper-alloy Roman shield boss missing only its rivets, c. 43 - 410 AD. The shield boss is formed from a concave, domed knob with a wide, flat flange. Four lozenge-shaped rivet holes pierce the flange, spaced equally around the central knob. The edges of the rivet holes bend out on the underside, suggesting that the rivets were pierced through from the upper side. The upper surface of the shield boss is marked by a pair of grooves running in parallel to each other around the outer edge of the shield boss. This is repeated in the centre of the rim as well as around the central domed kn…

A fragment of copper-alloy edging or binding, possibly from a shield, dating to the first or second century AD. The fragment comprises a hollow, hemispherical strip of metal that is bent in the centre. At one end are two flat, D-shaped attachment plates, each with a small circular perforation; one is filled with iron corrosion products. At the other end are two further flat, D-shaped attachment plates bent inwards on the underside of the strip, one of which is damaged. These are connected by a small rivet with a hemispherical head 4mm in diameter. In plan, the strip is roughly rectang…

A fragment of copper-alloy edging or binding from a hexagonal shield dating to the first or second century AD. Bishop and Coulston note that metallic edging is not found on later Roman shields (Bishop and Coulston 2006, 179). The fragment comprises a hollow, hemispherical strip of metal, which is decorated along one edge with a row of stamped arcs. In plan, the strip is rectangular in shape. At one end, the strip appears to be broken. At the other, it extends at a 45 degree angle which indicates that it edged a hexagonal shield. The fragment of shield edging measures 74mm in length, 5…

A fragment of copper-alloy edging or binding, possibly from a shield (although it does appear rather fragile for this purpose), dating to the first or second century AD. The fragment comprises a rectangular sheet of copper alloy which has been bent to create a 'C'-shaped profile. At one end of the fragment, there extend two flat trapezoidal tabs, which meet where the sheet has been bent. Each tab possesses an irregular circular perforation which appears to have been created by pushing an object through the sheet. It is possible there was a similar arrangement of tabs at the opposite e…

Copper alloy edging mount, possibly from a shield. Cast segment of a semi-cylindrical concavo-convex object. One end is sharply narrowed with a sharp lip, while the other is probably externally stepped, which may indicate an overlapping series of similar rebated segments, as might be required around an object of rounded form. As an edging, this would fit a board of thickness circa 7mm. The interpretation offered above is suggested by shield edgings from Late Iron Age burials at Wetwang Slack, East Yorkshire, though the accompanying and reported finds from this find spot should argue a…

Romano-British Curved length of U-section sheet binding strip, both ends broken, with two separate, differently sized, round ended sheet strips fitting tightly around the exterior. Both are decorated with grooves and probably pierced by rivets. Parts of the surfaces and interior are covered / filled with adherent soil. Perhaps a shield binding, although these normally have integral rounded lobes with rivets. Another odd feature is the inconsistency of the width. A rebate before one end leaves the internal width of the U-section at 3.5mm while that at the other end is c.6.5mm.
