This is a lead alloy seal matrix that has an oval plate. On the reverse is a rectangular rearwardly projecting plate (14mm wide, 10mm high and 4mm deep). That has a circular hollow on the top right edge, this is probably forming the top of a shaft that would ring the height of the projection, unfortunately the lower edge is encrusted in mud which covers any exit of the shaft, although a small circular depression is viable on the lower edge that would correspond with the upper hollow.  This shaft may have held a binding cord or wire. On the face of the seal is a re…

A Roman lead alloy seal dating to the 4th century AD. This seal is struck on one side with an impression of an obverse coin die, most likely of a nummus and around 18mm in diameter. This depicts a bust, right, with a now illegible legend around and is likely of the House Constantine (AD 306-363). The reverse of the object is convex with a channel running through the midline of the object which retains corroded iron remnants of a wire which secured the seal.

A lead seal (possibly a closure for a bag) was also thought possibly to be associated with the coins. This was found to be undiagnostic: Richard Hobbs was of the opinion that it was not Roman and Geoff Egan was of the opinion that it was not Medieval or Post-Medieval in date. British Museum curators also thought it was unlikely to be early Medieval in date.

A Roman lead alloy seal impression, probably dating c. AD 180-35. The seal is oval with an image on one side only. The image is that of three busts, the outer most facing inwards, with a line underneath. There appears to be writing below but this is difficult to discern due to damage. The seal is in two pieces. On the back are traces of textile impressions from where the seal was attached to cloth. The clearest portrait does have the appearance of Commodus (AD 177-92), possibly with his empress Crispina facing. The third head appears to be male (possibly Hercules, the Comes of Comm…
