AD 43 to c. 410) leather shoe or boot sole with iron hobnails: The sole of the shoe or boot is comprised of a leather outer sole, which faces the ground, a leather central sole (a lamina), and then a thin leather inner sole, all of which are incomplete, fragile as the leather is now dry and cracked. Overall, when viewed from the outer sole, the shoe is a sub-oval in plan with one lateral edge being slightly concave and the other convex suggesting it was worn on the left foot.
