A cast copper-alloy object, possibly the head from a pin or similar object but of uncertain date. It is circular in plan, concical in form, tapering to an integral shaft that is incomplete due to old breaks. The top surface of the head has evidence of tool/hammer marks, probably resultant from manufacture, and there are perhaps traces of gilding around the tapering sides. The shaft at the base appears to have a possible transverse collar, beneath which it terminates in old breaks, the precise form uncertain. The entire object measures 11.14mm in length, 9.91mm in diameter, and weighs …

Copper alloy Possible Pin, as identified by finder. Cast pin with small bun-shaped sub-spherical head and a short thick tapered shank; corrosion leaves it uncertain whether a moulded collar lies between head and shank. The small head and thick shank distinguish this object from the majority of pins, whether used as dress fastening items - for which this example would be robust enough - or for pinning hair or veil. Suggested date: Roman to Early Medieval, 40-850. Length: 32.4mm, Diameter (head): 5.3mm, Weight: 1.75gms.

The copper-alloy globular headed remains of what is likely to have originally been a pin. The artefact is incomplete but consists of a globular shaped head, now corroded with some of the surface missing, that seems to originally have had a flat top and 6.00mm length of incomplete shaft. The fragment weighs 1.53g. The head has a diameter of 7.51mm and height of 6.68mm. There is no visible evidence that the head was decorated in any way but this has to remain uncertain due to the condition of the surface. The shaft probably had a circular cross-section of 3.53mm diameter however the sur…

An incomplete and corroded Roman to Medieval pin head. The head of the pin is sub-spherical with a slightly more conical lower half. The shank of the pin is circular in cross section and integral with the head. It extends for approximately 22mm before terminating in an old break. The pin is undecorated and lacks any diagnostic features or secure archaeological context; hence it can only be given a wide date range.

The top is decorated with a deeply incised X. The top and bottom of the sides of the cylinder are bordered with an incised line. Inside these, the sides are decorated with four Xs and one area of four horizontal grooves. It is not clear what date should be attributed to this pin. Copper alloy pin, possibly inlaid. Cast tapering pin of round section of maximum diameter 2.1mm with a stepped cylindrical drum shaped head. A pair of circumferential lines appear running aslant around the larger element of the head, possibly marking an indeterminate inlay. A finely incised cross hatching is carried over these lines, over the sides of the lower drum of the pin head, and also across the flat top of the pin head. When the metal was bright, this texture may have caught the light attractively, and may have facilitated adjustment. It does not appear to relate to the origin…

Copper alloy pin. Cast round section tapering shank with a collared ball head. The shank is bent at ninety degrees at its mid point and curves more gently above the bend, possibly from use as a hair pin to fasten coiffure. The form would be compatible with either a Roman or Anglo-Saxon date, though shorter pins of this style are more common in the later part of this range. Suggested date: Roman to Early Medieval, 43-800. Length (as found): 32.9mm, Diameter (ball head): 5.1mm, Weight: 2.30gms.
