Head of a probable Roman copper-alloy pin and a very short stub of the shaft. The head is globular, slightly flattened on the underside. The remnant of the shaft is circular in cross-section. It is thick at its junction with the head and begins to taper before the break, which is not recent. There are no decorative markings. The metal is patinated pale green. Mid-1st to early 5th century. Diameter (head): 9.5mm, (shaft, immediately beneath head): 6.6mm, (shaft, at break): 4.5mm. Length: 11.0mm. Weight: 2.7g

Apparently complete Roman copper-alloy pin. It has a globular head, which is flattened on the underside, and a tapering shaft, somewhere between square and circular in cross-section. It terminates in a blunt point. Very similar to Crummy (1983) No. 2995. Crummy believes that object such as these are ‘almost certainly from furniture upholstery’ (ibid, p115). Mid-1st to early 5th century. Length: 38.4mm. Diameter (head): 10.3mm, (shaft, immediately under head): 5.3mm. Weight: 6.1g

A copper alloy ring-headed pin of uncertain date. The pin's head is formed from a loop of the sub-circular sectioned wire which forms the shank. The gap between the end of the loop and the neck is closed with some grey material, possibly degraded solder. There are incised chevron decorations on the surface of the loop just before the closure point, between incised lines forming collars. The neck and shank have a kink and bend; this form somewhat resembles swan-necked pins of early iron age date, however it is not possible to determine if this bending is accidental and pos…

Bent, but complete copper-alloy probably Roman pin. Circular hemispherical head curving more tightly at its equator. The first section of the shaft is parallel sided and then swells outwards in the middle section, before tapering gradually back down to a final point. The shaft has a circular cross-section throughout its length. The shape of the head is more Roman than Anglo-Saxon, and the lack of a collar reinforces a likely Roman date. See IOW-313B52 and NMS-53EC44. The dark brown patinated surface is breaking broken down to a light green more powdery surface beneath. C…

Copper-alloy pin, probably of Roman date. Apparently complete but heavily corroded and bent. It is roughly oval in cross-section, thickest at the head and tapering gradually to a sharp point at the opposite end. There is a faint hint of one, two or three, parallel circumferential grooves at the head, although these are far from certain. The bend is of 90 to 100 degrees and occurs at just over one fifth of the distance from the point to the head. Mid-1st to early 5th century. Length (estimated, unbent): 61mm. Width: 3.8mm. Thickness: 3.7mm. Weight: 1.6g

Copper-alloy and iron object, probably a Roman pin. It consists of a near-spherical grey-green copper-alloy head, 10.5mm in diameter and slightly flattened, with an area of iron corrosion projecting from one side which could be the remains of an iron shaft. On the opposite side is a flattened circular patch of iron, c. 4mm in diameter, apparently the other end of the shaft as it passes through the head. This brings the maximum length to 10.8mm. It weighs 4.3g. Compare NMS-984F14.

An incomplete copper-alloy Roman pin. Only the head and a small section of the shaft survive. The head is a flattened globular knob shape, while the shaft is circular in cross-section. The surface of the metal is corroded and the break is well worn. It belongs to Cool's (1990, 151-4) Group 1, but without the rest of the shaft the fragment cannot be assigned a sub-type. Cool (ibid., 154) suggests that pins with knob heads were in use throughout the Roman period although may have gained popularity later in the period. Length: 25.02mm, diameter of stem: 3.49mm, diameter of head…

Fragment of a Roman copper-alloy pin, consisting of a sub-conical head and the beginning of a shaft with collars that are square in cross-section. The head is sub-circular in cross-section. It tapers in diameter both towards the shaft and away from it, although it tapers to a greater degree (reaching a smaller diameter) and over approximately three times the distance towards the shaft than away from it. Opposite the shaft, after the taper, it has a low domed face with a small spherical knob projecting from the centre. The shaft is initially circular in cross-section and waisted: wh…

Description: Ring-shaped head from a silver proto-handpin. The head is oval, slightly wider than it is tall, and fairly flat, with both front and reverse slightly rounded, but the front more than the reverse. There is an oval perforation placed slightly above centre. The front has very well-executed decoration in two halves, an area of ribbing on the upper half and a sunken panel area of relief decoration on the lower half.  The ribbed area is covered with wider and narrower transverse ridges, which could also be described as beads separated by fillets. There are 13 of the b…

Incomplete copper alloy pin. Undecorated ovoid head (5mm x 6mm) tapering down to a damaged, un-collared, shaft bent through 90 degrees. The oval section shaft increases in size from 2.2mm (longest axis) adjacent to the head, to 3.7mm over its 32mm extant length, before terminating in a old break. .  Without context plain collarless pins such as this one can be difficult to date. Roman to Medieval covers the date span with a strong preference to the former. Circa AD 43-1500. Weight 1.81g

Incomplete copper alloy Roman pin. 6.8mm diameter plano-convex head, the upper surface of which is shaped into an octofoil. The head is separated from a half-round collar by a 2mm wide reel. The tapering sub-circular cross-section shank of the pin is 39mm long from the collar to its end, where it terminates in an old break. The diameter of the shank over its length goes from 4mm to 2mm at the break. The pin has a dark green to dark brown lustrous patina. A related pin without the upper head decoration can be seen on the PAS database at SF-128F56. Cool's group 6. Circa AD 50-150.

Very small Roman copper-alloy pin. It is corroded and worn so that any surface detail has been lost; it has a smooth brown patina. The head and shaft are both circular in cross-section, the head a maximum of 3mm in diameter. The head starts at the top with a long narrow round-ended element which tapers into a larger rounded moulding. Below this is a slim ridge between two narrowed waists; below the lower waist, the shaft begins with a diameter of 3mm before tapering to a right-angled bend around 35mm from the top of the head, and then a sharp point. Some of the shaft is probably missi…

Copper-alloy pin with large globular head and slender shaft. No decoration can be seen on the head, although it is very worn; the diameter is 9.5mm. The shaft is circular in cross-section and tapers quickly to just over 2mm in diameter, then gently tapers to 1mm before the tip. The shaft is straight and unbent, but it is uncertain whether it is complete or whether it has a very worn break. The entire pin is 37mm long and weighs 4.50g. There are similar items from Roman contexts in Colchester, catalogued as 'nails' in Crummy 1983 (e.g. no. 2995, on p. 115) although this example ha…

Complete copper-alloy pin, probably Roman but possibly alternatively middle Anglo-Saxon. The head is solid and hemispherical, with a rounded angle between flat base and rounded top, possibly worn. When viewed from above the head seems more oval, and measures 7 x 8mm. The circular-section shaft tapers from 3mm in diameter where it leaves the head (with no collar) to 2mm in diameter shortly below, where it is bent at just over right angles. It then swells again to 3mm in diameter before a second slight bend, after which it tapers to a sharp point. The bends do not appear to have ca…
