A complete cast copper alloy probable netting needle of Roman to post-medieval date, c. AD 200-1900. The object is generally sub-cylindrical with sub-oval-sectioned shaft which tapers to a rounded point. The lower shaft and point are slightly bent. At the other terminal, the object flares to a sub-circular and slightley flattened head measuring 11.1 mm across. An complete copper alloy possible netting needle dating from the Roman to post medieval period. At one end of the needle there is a pair of forked prongs at the end of the shaft. The prongs are formed of two strips of copper alloy that meet at the end creating a sub triangular shape. The shaft is square in cross section, narrowing slightly at the terminal end which has a circular hole pierced through. The needle has a dark green patina and measures 78.1mm in length, 6.2mm in maximum width and 2.03g in weight.

Copper alloy probable netting needle. A cast pin with an oval-ended flat head with a drilled hole of diameter 2.5mm, bent at mid-shank and worn at the head; abraded. There is no gutter next to the hole, in contrast to copper alloy sewing needles from Flixborough and elsewhere. The curved shank might suggest this to be for a specialised task, and is a feature of larger netting needles. Suggested date: Unknown, Roman to Medieval, 43-1500.

An incomplete netting needle which has part of one end and all of the other missing, and is bent in the middle. The partial end is flattened with a wide flat bottomed groove which tapers to a point. The mid section is circular in section.

An incomplete example of solid cast construction, the shank is bent almost double, at one end is a flattened terminal with an oval aperture, the shank at this end is rectangular in section, it tapers gently towards the other end and becomes sub-circular in section about half way down its length. The end is broken off and missing.
