An incomplete bone needle, potentially of Roman date. The needle is made from the exterior of a long bone, with a flat cross section and with one side smooth and finished and the other retaining the spongey surface of the bone's interior, which has been partially polished with the high points smoothed. The wider end has a narrow rectangular eye, 5.6mm in length and an incomplete spatulate terminal. The other end tapers to a break.

A complete Roman bone needle, AD 50-410. The needle has a pointed head and tapers to a point. The eye is formed by two drilled holes forming a figure of eight aperture. The bone itself has taken on a dark brown patina due to the deposition environment. This is a Crummy type 1 needle. Other Roman needles on the database are LON-62C774, BM-A20720 and BM-A1EE8B. Crummy (1995:65) writes "type 1 is only found in bone, and is the counterpart of bone hairpin Types 1 and 2, being a simple tapering shaft with a pointed head. The length of the head varie…

Copper alloy needle. A possibly drawn and flattened wire rod with a point at one end and a rectangular slot of length 9.5mm and width 1.4mm near its broader end, the slot being expanded as a round hole of diameter 1.6mm at its lower end. The object is fiercely abraded overall. A long patch of bright metal may be abrasion from the time of discovery, though other spots of possible white metal plating also appear. This was also a feature of an object found alongside this (NLM-A3BB03), the finder suggesting the two may be parts of the same object. This interpretation would dictate a needle…

A  copper-alloy needle of probable Roman date c AD43 - 410, although could be dated later due to similar form. The needle is flat on both sides and has a flat head with a pierced hole at the top. The eye measures 2.52mm in length and 1.75mm in width, and is positioned 6.28mm from the top. The object has a green patina. This needle is likely an example of Crummy's type 2. Similar examples were excavated from 3rd and 4th century contexts at Colchester, (Crummy 1983: 66 to 67)

An incomplete Roman copper alloy needle, toilet or sugical instrument, dating to c AD43 - 410. It is complete except for a break across the 'eye' at the terminal. It is a pointed oval in section, flattened towards one end where the eye is located, with the shaft tapering to its (still sharp) point. There are five incised transverse lines below the eye. Now, the needle is bent in two places, forming three sides of a rectangle in shape.  Dimensions: Eye 4.6mm x 1.3mm; shaft 3mm x 2mm; original length c 70 - 80mm; 1.99g in weight No direct parallel found.

Iron netting needle or pin with a sub-circular-sectioned shank and a head curled over to form an eye or loop, in a similar form to that of a modern garden skewer. Length 87mm, width of head 10mm, weight 7g. No parallel has been noted, but the context suggests the object is Roman, mid 1st - 4th century.

Plain silver needle of uncertain, probably Post Medieval date, c. AD 1400-1950. The needle has a sub-rectangular cross sectioned eye end which ends in a rounded terminal and then narrows and thins into the round shaft. At the point it ends in a flat end, probably a break as it is neither pointed nor rounded. The needle has a rectangular eye with slightly rounded corners and between the eye and the adjacent end there is a groove down each wide face, continuing the indent of the eye. It is slightly bend with the shaft now curved in several places. The needle is 82.6mm long and 4.2m…

An incomplete large bone pin or needle, possibly made from a pig fibula. One end has been sharpened to a point (which has broken off) and the opposite end has been carved to form a flat projection with a circular hole drilled into the end. The surface has a brown patina and has suffered abrasion damage. On one side of the head, just below the hole, is a carved design which appears to be Anglo-Scandinavian style knotwork (photo 2) and which may suggest an early Medieval date for the object.

Copper alloy possible needle fragment. A probably drawn wire shank with one end flattened, perhaps for an eye, broken, and gnawed; the other end is stepped and again apparently chewed. The surface is also abraded. This appears likely to be a domestic item, perhaps a needle, or part of a dress accessory such as a pin, and was perhaps relegated to service as a child's teething aid. The chewing of improbable materials by children, animals or vermin is occasionally recognised, for the former perhaps a mute testimony to childish curiosity or parental desperation. Suggested date: Unknown, R…

A fragment of a copper alloy needle of possible Roman date. Only the head of the object survives. This is a flattened spatulate shape with a rectangular hole c.52mm in length positioned c.10mm behind the outer end. Beneath the hole the needle becomes narrower and oval in cross-section before terminating in a break. This is an example of Crummy's (1983, 65) Type 2, which occurs in both bone and bronze and appear to have been in use throughout the period. A complete wrought iron needle or bodkin of probable Roman date. The needle has a round sectioned shaft with sharp point. At the opposing end the shank has been hammered flat. A silver probable needle of unknown date, probably Roman to Post Medieval, AD 43 - 1700. It is broken across the head, so that the eye is missing. The needle is rectangular in cross-section, tapering to a point at the tip. It has a groove on both faces below the eye, which appears to extend through the whole thickness, forming a split or division in the metal. It is badly bent in two places, at about one third and two thirds along its length, forming an S shape. The needle is 62.7mm long as bent, 3.3mm across the broken head, and 1.9mm thick. 2.81g. A complete bone needle probably dating to the Roman period. The stem is circular in section and highly polished. It tapers to a rounded point at one end. At the other, the stem flattens to accommodate an elongated oval faceted eye. Beyond the eye, the head is flattened further and semi-circular in plan. The needle measures 111mm in length and 4mm in diameter. The needle can be assigned to Crummy's Type 2 (Needles with flat spatulate head) (Crummy 1983, 65). This type appears in first to fourth century contexts.
