An incomplete probable Roman copper-alloy ferrule dating to circa AD 43-410. It is conical in form. It has a dark green, smooth patina. Its terminal is comprised of a rounded knop. Half of the circumference of the piece is decorated three incised oblique grooves. A horizontal border meets the groove at the attachment end. The socketed end appears broadly rectangular with jagged edges.  The findspot and appearance suggests a probable Roman date. A similar example is recorded under  SF-8C52A5

An complete cast copper-alloy object, probably a ferrule or collar of Roman date. It is a sub-oval in plan, but was possibly circular originally. In cross-section it is rectangular with a central rib on the exterior surface. The rib has vertical notches as decoration. The ferrule has a well developed dark green-grey shiny patina. It measures 20.47mm in length, 13.41mm in width, 3.46mm deep and 1.18g in weight. The object is probably a ferrule rather than a finger ring as the upper and lower edges are not blunt, slightly sharp so would have been uncomfortable to wear. Th…

A copper alloy hollow cone or ferrule of uncertain dating, but possibly Roman. The ferrule consists of a hollow cone, which tapers to a sharp point. Signs of damage are visible around the the top and the bottom of the cone, which may suggest it was originally part of a large object. The socket is 3.8 mm deep. No other attachment features are visible. It measures 17.7 mm in height, 12.6 mm diameter at the base, and 2.1 mm thick at the apex. It weighs 3.8 g. The cone is a mid to dark green colour, with an even surface patina. It is possible that the cone may have bee…

A fragment of a possible Roman copper alloy ferrule dating to c AD 50 - 350. The ferrule comprises part of a cylindrical object, with about a third of the original diameter remaining. There are old breaks on three edges and one intact edge. There is an incised decorative groove just below this rim with two parallel similar grooves c.10mm below the rim. The object has broken about 8 mm below this. The object's mid-green patina and simple grooved decoration suggests a Roman date. The inside surface is slightly roughened and there may have been an attempt, at an early date, to repai…

A conical copper alloy ferrule of unknown date, possibly Roman to Post Medieval (AD 43 - 1800). It appears to be cast, and is a sub-circular cone with a solid pointed end, and hollow wider end. The cavity is filled with soil and a fibrous material. It is probably leather or textile, but doe not appear to be wood. There is an incised groove border round the wider end, and two attachment holes breaking this line. The holes are at right angles to each other. There is possible a third hole at another cardinal point, but it is unclear owing to a dent. The holes appear to be countersunk. Th…

A complete iron ferrule of conical type probably dating to the Roman period. Complete. Oval split socket, tapering to a burred and blunted tip. FER02 ; L 64 mm ; max W (socket, external) 18 x 16 mm ; T (socket) 1 mm ; Wt 15 g. Their exact function beyond this is unclear. They may have been used to protect the butts of spears, but their prevalence on civilian as well as military sites makes this uncertain (Manning, 1985, p. 141), and they may have been used on other objects, such as barge poles. The three ferrules from Piercebridge are all constructed differently, and need not h…

Copper alloy ferrule of probable Roman date (c. AD 43 - 409). A rectangular strip of copper alloy, the edges overlapping slightly, one folded inwards. The strip appears to be wrapped around a lump of corroded iron. The exterior face is decorated with a wide central rib flanked by two narrow ribs on either side, two of which appear to have been beaded, although this is now heavily worn.
